Is Key West worth the 3.5 hour drive (7 hour roundtrip) from Miami?

I'm getting mixed reviews from my acquaintances. Is Key West a must see attraction? Seems like a long arse drive because I just don't know how good that place is. Will I regret my decision to visit Key West? Or will I regret not going there? We're a young couple with no kids.

Just spent a week there, it's very laid back. If you have a couple days to spend there I would definitely recommend going but if you're just making a day trip I wouldn't bother. You could always just stop in Key Largo or Islamarado instead of going all the way to Key West.

We drove in from Miami. Thought it would be great.
Rented a convertible, was going to take our time and enjoy the views.

Never again. It was 102 degrees so the top never came down because it was stop and go traffic pretty much the whole way down there.

If you go, just fly into key west. You can rent a golf cart to get around for pretty cheap. Or bicycles if you're into that sorta thing.

Don't expect nice beaches. There are none. Nightlife was pretty good and the food was great.

1000% recommend renting a convertible and making the drive. Use sunscreen. Drive in your swimsuits. The drive is awesome if you love road trips at all. Definitely not worth a day trip. 2n/3d at least. Do the sunset boat tour. Not a place to go for just beaches. Like someone else said - there are none. But if you want island atmosphere and a road trip to remember - go.

There is a small beach that a lot of people don't know about on the north coast by the Grand Hyatt. You should check that out.
Go with a lot of time. Don't rush it. Stop at places along the way. Go in the water even.

There is no Grand Hyatt in Key West.

Depends on how many days you'll be in Miami

I love Key West. Not sure if that drive is worth it unless staying 2 or 3 nights

Islamorada is much closer, and it's pretty awesome. We just went and had a great time with our kids.

Key West isn't for everyone. I don't mean that in a "you may not be cool enough to like it" sort of way. Some people really won't enjoy it that much and I don't blame them.

The place is laid back to a fault, and it's funky. I think the culture is worth checking out, and it's definitely a fun place to drink away a couple of days.

But overall, it's very much a "we love it, hope you like it too, but if not, we don't give a shite" kinda place.

I agree. It was actually "too slow" for me. I loved it for 3 days but I don't think I will ever go back there again to vacation quite honestly.

Remember key west is like 6 miles by 2 miles or something like that. A lot of it is "touristy", so if you like that sort of thing - cheesy bars, jet ski rentals, scooter and golf cart rentals, restaurants with a chain feel - go for it.

Now, there are some great spots off the beaten path as far as restaurants and bars go. But is it worth the pricey airfare and accommodations? Not to me.

For the travel and money, you can get the same laid back affect on 30A or even Bay St. Louis, mississippi (crazy, I know).

Personally, KW is the most overrated place I've visited. And I dig the "island life". I'm sure it was awesome 25 years ago befor it got commercialized

If you're not doing fishing charters, I agree.

But KW is hard to beat if you're doing a couple charters. 30A is nowhere close.

My experience with 30A is not laid back at all. It's the same people who are on the Atlanta highways bringing their angst on vacation. Traffic is terrible. Along with hordes of kids of all ages.

A little late chiming in, but if you only have a day, then no it really isn't worth the hassle, unless you just want to say you have done it.

If you want to make the drive from Miami, I would recommend taking two or three days, and staying somewhere in the middle keys - several have mentioned Islamorada and that is a nice place with a nice choice of hotels to choose from.

Use that as your base and drive on down to Key West and spend a day. There are some touristy things - Wreckers Museum and to an extent the Hemmingway house, but I liked it. There are tons of choices for really good food.

From Islamorada you can find several charters to go out fishing, and you can also find dive shops that do half day or full day dive/snorkeling trips out to the reef. I took a scuba class at AU, and our big trip at the end of the semester was a three day trip in the Keys. I want to say we used Innerspace Dive Center as our dive master.

If you want to go to a beach down there, check out Bahia Honda. It has been ranked in Conde Naste as one of the best beaches in the world.

But if he's wanting fishing, he could just as easily just do Islamorada, which is arguably better than Key West.

Agreed that Key West is worth skipping unless you want to go just to say you've been. I'd rather spend time in Miami and you can do the same things you can do in Key West in Islamorada, Largo, etc.

Check out Grayton beach, it's bordered on one side by the State Park so it's not nearly as packed as the other places on 30A and you find long stretches of beach to have all to yourself.
