My husband and I are in Denver this week but we’d like to go to the mountains this weekend. We’d like to stay within a 3 hour drive of Denver. We want access to hiking trails, shops, restaurants, etc. I’m debating between Breck and Steamboat. Which would you choose? Is there another town I’m missing? We’ve already been to CO Springs, the Royal Gorge area, Estes Park, and Vail, so I’d like to explore something new. Any recommendations on hiking trails, lodging, restaurants, and activities would be much appreciated!

I really enjoyed Salida, just to give another option to consider. It's a small town with shops, restaurants, and hiking nearby.

Go to Steamboat, check out strawberry park hot springs. They have some hiking trails you can take there if you want. Not sure what the hiking conditions will be like with the recent snow.

Glenwood springs, Salida/BV, or even boulder much closer can check all those boxes. Ski resorts are only fun right now for those who literally can’t wait to ski. Early season skiing is shitty

You said Estes Park, but did you go to Rocky Mountain National Park>

If you have, I would do some of the other NPs.

The hot springs were super fun. Good way to kill a few hours.

Great mix of in town shops and convenient hiking. Plus the drive up and back is pretty too.

Maybe in CO

I was at Jackson Hole last year on opening day and it was fantastic. Almost all trails open.

Breckenridge and steamboat are both amazing, BUT if it is a choice between those I would choose Breckenridge over steamboat just because of the downtown area is right there, slope side, so much to do and see and it’s all walkable , no need for a car or taxi

Eat at ember, their menu changes, and they often will do a three or four course dinner for around $75 a person. It’s a small place, so it fills up quickly, the owner/chef come by the tables to see how everything‘s going…the experience and the food were both first class.
