Looking for ideas for a trip to Oahu in May. Traveling party will be my family with wife and 14yo daughter and my in-laws (both in their 70s) so difficult hikes are a no go. We have all been before except my daughter. We are staying just off Waikiki Beach, will have a car and always appreciate good local eats.

This is what we have planned so far.

-Morning Lanakai Pillbox hike followed by a stop at the Lanakai Beach.
-Memorial Day at Pearl Harbor
-Morning snorlkeling at Shark's cove followed by an early lunch at Giovani's Shrimp Truck in Kuhuku then a full day at the Polynesian Cultural Center
-One morning we will hike Diamondhead and one morning we will snorkel hanauma Bay
-At least one afternoon beach day at Ala Moana park
-I'lm going to play golf one day and think I might do that in the afternoon after either diamond head OR Hanauma Bay and just let the family uber back while I go play.
-Malasadas from Leanard's bakery are a must

Looks like a pretty good agenda. But a head's up about the Polynesian Cultural Center, in case you haven't been there. It's run by the Mormon Church, so if you stay all day and then for the night time luau, be prepared for an alcohol-free experience. I know you're taking a young teen, but just saying.

We went to Hawai'i for our honeymoon and decided to do the luau at our hotel, mai tai's and all.

Spend a day on the North Shore in Haleiwa. If you go during the week its has a great little downtown area to just check out shops and get some shaved ice and get the surfing vibe. During the weekends it can get busy but there is a food truck right next to the grocery store that serves Huli huli chicken its cheap and fricking Delicious. There is a Giovini Shrimp truck in that area and it serves the world famous garlic shrimp but honestly for the wait I wasn't that impressed. Waikiki is alot of hustle and bustle with lots of people and traffic get out and check out places like Sandy Beach and get out at the state park right in that area. Aloha and have fun. We do Hawaii every five years

When I used to live there, the BEST thai restaurant was Opal Thai on the northshore. I'm pretty sure he moved it down to Honolulu, so you should check it out.

Lots of great pie shops in little towns all up and down the island.

I can't imagine doing the pillbox hike at age 70, but maybe your in laws are fit.

Memorial day at Pearl Harbor ought to be amazing. Probably pretty busy though.

My personal favorite island drink was a Lava Flow.

If ya'll walk around Waikiki at night, which is fun, be prepared to explain to your daughter what a hooker is.

My dad made that mistake in early 1980's during a trip to Astroworld in Houston. My dads blurts out is that some HOOKERS to mom while we were cruising to our hotel? Myself being I guess around 9 or 10 years old with my twin brother in the backseat, Dad what's a Hooker? Mom gave him the look of death and dad said, "Son this ain't the time!"

We did some breathtaking hard hikes, but if you want something easy, drive up to Tantalus Lookout one evening. Amazing view of Waikiki and some grass to relax on.

Second the Haleiwa suggestion. We made it an all day excursion by driving up the eastern edge of the island along the coast up to Haleiwa and then back through the Dole Plantation. Really cool trip.

Right now we’re only scheduled to go to the North Shore one day and a good solid. Nine hours of that will be at the Polynesian cultural center. I was thinking about a little snorkeling at sharks Cove and lunch at a food truck before heading to the cultural center but do you think it’s worth it to make two days up on the North Shore?

While on north shore, a stop at turtle beach is cool…not to be confused with Turtle Bay resort.

It’s just west of Waimea Bay with minimal signage.

You can rent kayaks and kayak out to the Mokes from Kailua beach. We rented a pontoon boat and went out to the sandbar in Kaneohe Bay one day, which has awesome views.

The best hikes are the hardest, but the Pillbox hike that you're already going to do has a good reward for an easy hike.

I think it’s worth going to the North Shore on 2 days. The North Shore beaches were our favorite on the island. We spent abt 2 hours at the PCC before the dinner and fire show, and that was plenty. Unless you’ve booked a private tour of the PCC, I can’t imagine spending all day there.

If you aren’t doing a luau at the PCC I’d end the day at pounders beach right across from the PCC, or go watch the sunset at laie point.
