Huge Changes to American Airlines Frequent Flyer Program Today
Posted on 6/6/16 at 3:40 pm

For all you frequent flyers on American, AA announced some huge changes today. Added minimum EQD, upgrades will be based on EQD spent per year, miles earned also going down the tube, and more... I've got not more reason to be loyal to American anymore, will probably just go for the cheapest ticket. Sad part is their program used to be the best by far but they followed the route of Delta and United

Earning award miles For travel starting August 1, 2016, you’ll earn more miles the more you spend with us. As an elite member, you’ll earn at even higher rates.
Elite status level/// Miles earned per USD spent
AAdvantage® member 5
Gold 7 (40% bonus)
Platinum 8 (60% bonus)
Executive Platinum 11 (120% bonus)
On January 1, 2017, we’ll add a new elite status level and adjust qualification requirements. We’ll also make updates to upgrades later in 2017. Introducing AAdvantage® Platinum Pro We’re excited to introduce an additional elite level, AAdvantage® Platinum Pro. You can qualify for Platinum Pro starting in 2017.
Starting January 1, 2017, we’ll add Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs) to our elite-qualification requirements. You’ll earn 1 EQD for every U.S. dollar spent on eligible flights (base fare plus carrier-imposed fees, excluding any government-imposed taxes and fees).
You can earn elite status by reaching the EQD threshold, and either the Elite Qualifying Mile (EQM) or Elite Qualifying Segment (EQS) threshold.
Upgrades
Later in 2017, we’ll make changes to upgrade windows and prioritization. Upgrade priority will be based on a 12-month rolling EQD total, sorted by elite status level.

FYI, it was announced earlier this year that AA was going to a fee based mileage programs. The airlines are tired of the mileage run whores racking up status.

New tier too - Platinum Pro. And upgrades will be based not only on status but amount of EQDs spent as well. Pretty much the end of loyalty for leisure travelers.

I guess they got tired of elites purposefully going out of their way to fly them for trips to Europe, Asia, across the US, etc. Even if I've done a few mileage runs on them, what purpose would there be in flying them anymore? The earnings are much worse than on United or Delta even at their new rates. Heck, look at how many customers United lost after they changed their program and what they've had to do within the past year to try and regain customers. I've got a feeling AA is about to lose a lot of business

I think that's my plan once my status runs out at the end of 2017. I've never even flown on Alaska before but I've heard good things

Don't really have to fly Alaska. The mileage requirement for top tier status is only 10K more when earned on partners than would be on AS flights exclusively. Plus you still have the MCE on AA and DL flights plus mileage bonuses for elites. And I am sure I do not need to elaborate how awesome AS FF program is when it comes to burning miles. Even more so with the addition of JL now.

As a business traveler who is about to 100k miles by the end of the month, I'm pretty happy with the changes. The airlines make their money off of the weekly commuters like me who buy tickets based on schedule (not so much on price), and we are the ones should be rewarded. Not the guy who buys a credick card and does 3 mileage runs on the cheap so he can use miles for a $4000 ticket.

Hey now, I used to do "mileage runs" on business trips. Saving my company money too...
Doing an ita search once, BTR-ATL-BHM-MEM-AUS was cheaper than BTR-ATL-AUS so I took advantage.

F that. My time is way too valuable. I get pissed when I have to connect anywhere out of CLT these days.
Now I've been going CLT-SFO every week since September, so my situation be different...

Hate to see this effects the lower statuses. I have been gold the last 2 years and on pace for Platinum this year. Can only imagine another tier will do nothing but hurt. I've been pleasantly surprised how frequently I'm upgraded to business at Gold.

You sound stupid.
ETA: If you think people will stop MRs due to just this, you are stupider than you sound.

It was meant to sound stupid.
And it won't stop anyone from MR. My point was that Airlines are starting to tilt the rewards towards the frequent business traveler (see what delta is doing).

quote:You heard correctly, from what I've seen and heard. I've flown with them about ten times and everything was spot on. I have in-laws who were Alaskan residents for about six years and then moved to LA for four years and then to Seattle for another five years and they love Alaska Airlines.

I've reconciled myself to the fact that the big four US carriers are all going to together dumb down their rewards programs to the same minor cost to them level.

Delta and United. And they lost a bunch of customers to AA which they're scrambling to get back. Especially United. Same will happen to AA except people will just stop caring about loyalty. And if you think this is good for you, you're mistaken. If CLT-SFO is mainly what you're doing, you stand no chance on the MQD ladder out of a hub compared to International J/F business travelers. Quit pretending you're a big dog because someone else is footing a flight a week for you.

US carriers are devaluing themselves to customers while foreign airlines are gearing up by the day. Then US carriers cry to the government because they lose business to foreign carriers because they are providing a better product at a lower price
