Starting the planning process for our honeymoon next year. I have only been to Rome and Paris, she has never been across the pond. Thought about a Mediterranean cruise, but the dates don't work out for us. We really like both of these areas, from doing research on the region. Would like to split time between the two.
We'll probably do 2 weeks oversees to give us +/-10 days there after travel and jetlag. Budget $7500 max. Open to hotels or AirBnb
Has anyone been to either of these locations and have any experiences to share? Any other options to toss around?

Going to Sicily in Feb 2018....taking the car ferry from Rome (w/friends who live in Rome). Will drive around the island, as I understand that public transit is not good.
With just 10 days to spend, I'd focus on Italy alone. You could do Sicily and a bit of southern Italy, or fly in/out of Rome and add in Florence. I'd hate to waste travel time from Palermo or Messina to Santorini (or vice versa) on a relatively short trip.
Have you considered the Croatian coast instead of Santorini? Or Sardinia and Sicily? Much closer than Santorini, and scenic, rocky, interesting food.

I'm interested in your planning of Santorini because we are talking about doing that in September of 2018.

I did Sicily and Capri/Amalfi Coast in 10 days. Sicily is OK for a few days. I wish I'd spent more time in Capri and Amalfi Coast.

Santorini is gorgeous. It would be very romantic for Honeymoon. Beautiful scenery, historic ruins, wineries, beaches, etc. Easy to drive around the island. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies shows lot of Santorini.
Check trip advisor or AirBnb for Hotels/houses in the cliffs.
Also spend a few days in Athens.
We took the ferry from Athens to Mykonos and then to Santorini and flew back to Athens from Santorini. The ferry stops a several islands so it would be like having a mini cruise.
Haven't been to Crete, but have researched it and it is very interesting.

Suggestions for Sicily would be Taormina or Cefalu as far as smaller coastal towns.
Both give you decent enough access to Catania and Palermo respectively.
Sicily is decently cheap and stunning. Palermo has a Top 5 street food culture, easily. Also, the women are the most beautiful you will ever see.
You can do both Santorini and Sicily for around 10 daysish, for well under $5,000. So if you have the time, you may want to lengthen it a few days and add another place? Who knows.

I lived in Sicily for two years in the Navy.
Great diving off of Siracusa
Great Catacombs in Siracusa
Great Greek ruins in Sicily
WW2 Pillboxes still standing
Drive up Mount Etna, the drive up the mountain is worth it alone.
Prepare to eat late
If you rent a car it's no holds barred and I mean CRAZY!!!!!
Ask any questions you want. The beaches are covered with dead squid early in the summer.
Let me know if you have any questions.

If you go to Sicily, you have to do Taormina. I wrote a review in Houston's sticky. It's been my favorite destination thus far. Absolutely breathtaking.

Sicily is beautiful, but there are many places in Europe I would recommend you go before Sicily. It probably would not make my top 15.

Santorini is incredible and you guys will love it. We booked a hotel in Oia on the tip of the island, built into the side of a cliff. The cave hotels are the best and the views are unbelievable. Strongly prefer Oia over the larger Fira. Santorini has some great wines and there are several wine tour companies that I would suggest. Go hike the volcano, boat tour of the caldera, and eat tons of excellent food.
