end of trip. if something happens on the slopes (i shattered my collar bone before snowboarding) you want it to be at the end of the trip.

I have been to Zurich, the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and Zermatt. Switzerland is an awesome country with some beautiful sites. The train system is also impressive. Very punctual and use the app if you plan to do a lot of moving around by train.
Can't speak for skiing, but it's a wonderful place to hike and take in mountain views.

Are you an experienced skier or just want to try it for the first time? I'd suggest like the others and say near the end of the the trip. Normally after skiing your legs, thighs, and other muscles hurt so best to do it before heading home, might even help you sleep better on the plane.
Now skiing wise, I've been to the town of Grindelwald before except it was in October so a little too early. I managed to take the gondola all the way up to the top the views were beautiful. I stayed at the sunstar alpine hotel and it was $$$, but worth it plus right across the street from the gondola. Some of the best food I've ever had, had a a full spa area with fancy steam rooms, views of the swiss alps... The town is not very large, but has that rustic european feel.

Grindelwald
Grindelwald is great. We drove up from Lucerne, stopped in Interlaken and Lauderbrunnen (waterfalls there were great in April). Of course, this wasn't ski time, but it was a cool little town.
The highlight for us was going up to Mt. Pilatus. The views of the Alps and Lake Lucerne was incredible.

Never made it to lucerne or lauderbrunnen while I was there, interlaken was cool. I kept picturing some equivalent of the lochness monster in the lake . In any case, for what the OP is asking for, I think your road trip would be pretty nice in the winter (including Grindelwald for the skiing). Perhaps if he ended up in Zurich as well just to get the "city" feel and a direct flight back to the US
ETA: There is nothing to see in the Baden area. Maybe fly into geneva, make your way to interlaken and end in zurich? There's 3 areas of Switzerland: the french, italian, and german areas. If you do something like geneva - somewhere on italian border - interlaken - grindelwald - zurich you'd hit up all three

One thing OP should be sure to check is road closures. You may have to take the gondola or something at that time, for parts. Some of those roads are sketchy even in good conditions.

Would you consider Austria as I did this last year with 3 days of skiing?

Here is some advice from a non-skier. Go to Zermatt. I have been to Switzerland twice although I did not ski there. However, while in Zermatt I did take the lifts up to the ski slopes at the top and on various levels of the Klien Matterhorn which is the mountain next to and overlooking the Matterhorn. It was the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. You feel like you are on top of the world (which you pretty much are). The Alps are all around you and everything is covered in snow. You see the Matterhorn on one side and the town of Zermatt down below on the other side. And the skiing is world class. I have been to places with some incredible scenery, but when asked what is #1 on my list, this is my answer.

Currently planing a trip throughout Switzerland for this December-January. We will start in Zurich and end in Geneva. I have found the majority of skiing options are in the Lucerne area (Interlaken etc) but will continue to look at options in the Geneva area. Best of Luck
Edit: I am actually finding lots of Ski Resorts / Areas withing 90 minutes of Geneva
