I'm looking at 9-10 days as I want to do Troy, Gallipoli, as well as cappadocia.

hagia sophia was a beautiful byzantine greek orthodox church(post great schism) prior to the invaders.
It was actually built in the 6th century, hundreds of years before the great schism. Served as a church for 900 years before becoming a mosque.

,
Went there in 96.
It's amazing. Actually, kid you not, was on a train with twi Aussies from Greece... they were going to Gallipoli. Got to Turkey, no bank would take my Drachmas, said Greece is not a real country.
Had to buy bus ticket on black market.
Dont go to Turkey with Greek money, but go to Cappadocia. Early Christians living in underground cities it was amazing.
Turkey is difficult, no real rail. So you have to take long bus rides. Like from Istanbul to Ankara. It's not pleasant...but you get little glasses of tea everywhere for free.

I figure it will be an experience. I want to see as much as I can. I'll be looking up reviews on the tour companies to see which is the best. Might even do a hot air balloon ride in cappadocia.

Or you can fly nonstop from IST to Ankara.
And why would Turkey take Drachhma??
In any event, at least if all else fails dollars and euros can get things done there since the lira is total shite.

Almost every country exchanges money, jesus christ.
The banks would not exchange my currency.
Went to about 5 banks. They said, "Greece is not a real country. This is fake money."
I had been all over, this was the first time ever experienced of refusing money.
Also we got a "surprise Visa" on the train to Istanbul...because apparently Clinton issue a charge Visa against Turks.
Apparently Turkey does not recognize Greece as a country and so I had Monopoly money to the banks.
That was my point, don't go from Italy to Greece to Turkey as I did. That was a mistake...had no idea countries refused to acknowledge currency as legal tender from other countries. But Turkey does to their soul...hate Greece and vice-versa...so don't take the train from Athens to Istanbul like I did...too many military...spot-check Visa charges and just harassment.

Thanks for the heads up. I had also considered doing Athens then Istanbul. That would have been a headache.

Don't they use the euro in Greece?

Yes, the previous poster was there well before the Greeks joined Euro.
I took a boat into Turkey via the Rhodes to Marmaris ferry. At the border I could have paid the visa entrance fee with Euro or US Dollars.
Once in the country, I was using lira, but if you were in a jam they would of course take the more valuable currencies.

I was there for 3 weeks a few years ago when the "video" caused protests. I didnt see anything and never felt unsafe. I spent alot of time on the asian side also where there were few westerners.
I have olive skin so I fit in well and most thought I was turkish till I spoke, but my wife is really white, but she didnt have any issues.
A black woman that we ran into caught hell because very few black people go to turkey, so everybody wants to stare at them and take pictures of them. It didnt help that she was a tall woman, built like michelle obama with a huge Michelle obama arse. I remember being on the ferry with her and the kids would act like they were taking selfies to get a picture of her.
Only incident I had was a cab driver trying to do the old switcheroo on me saying I gave him a 5 instead of a 50.
I didnt like the food at all. whatever spice shite they use in india is also used there and doesnt agree with my taste buds.
things have ramped up a little bit since then, so not sure what to say.

Common scam around the world. That's why I plan to Uber as much as possible.

Same thing happened to me in Instanbul, but since I'm not on home turf, I didn't put up much of a fight. Just wasn't a smart business decision under the circumstances ie I had drunk people with me, half of them girls, etc.
It was 2009 before Uber so I didn't have the luxury.

Just saw reports Ataturk airport may be under attack. Bombs and gunfire.
Disappointing. It is an incredible place.
You aren't due there for a few weeks right?

Ya the TAK have been extremely active lately. As much as I like the Kurds, something needs to be done about TAK.

I'm curious if it will be them or not.
A few possible groups are capable. Turkey is in a bad spot.
