Starting to plan a Greece trip for Thanksgiving week. We are planning on leaving the 16th and flying out the 22nd. Im kind of limited on vacation days for 2023 (trying to save them) is reason for short trip. We have decided on Athens and Santorini. Would you fly into Santorini and out of Athens or vice versa? Leaving out of BTR or MSY. Best airline? Restaurant/hotel recs? Anything and everything is appreciated!
TIA
TIA

Don’t backtrack through Athens to catch your flight. Seeing Athens once is plenty enough plus its not super close to the airport.
Fly to Athens. Arrival day and one full day is enough. Fly to Santorini. Fly from Santorini to Paris, Amsterdam, or London to catch your long flight home, preferably to a city that has a nonstop to MSY which I think is only London right now.
Even direct from NYC, Athens is not a short flight.
ETa: stay in Oia and make sure you have a nice balcony.

Looks like we could also go early October for just a couple hundred more and fly MSY-Heathrow-Athens and Santorini-London-MSY. Are 6 and 22 hour layovers in London enough or is that miserable lol?

22 hours isn’t a layover, it’s an extra vacation day. We had essentially the same thing going Santorini>Athens>JFK. Spending another evening/night Athens wasn’t great. Our travel companions spent that time in Amsterdam and got to check out another city.
There are very few nonstop flights from Athens to the US. Flying from Santorini to a major hub city will increase your chances of getting back to the US if something bad happens.

We could use the layover to see a bit of London but unsure if that would even be enjoyable

For a hotel recommendation in Athens, we stayed at the Athens Cypria Hotel. It had a rooftop bar with a view of the Acropolis and was within walking distance to the changing of the guards. I think it's considered a 4 star hotel. Since you'll only be there for a night or two at the most, I would think this would suffice for you unless you want a really high-end hotel.

I'll look that one up! thanks

If you get tired of Greek food, I liked
the James Joyce Pub.
Brettos was a cool little bar.
Athens gets a lot of hate but I had fun. Lots of history there. I was also 24 and drinking the whole time so...

A few things. We fly out of Houston on Turkish Air round trip to Athens with a layover in IST for usually South of $900.
Athens, lunch at Diporto, a simple place for the locals located by the fresh markets. Dinner at Hytra, near downtown, or Varoulko in Piraeus.
We took ferry to Santorini and flew back to ATH and on back to Houston same day.
Get the tomato fritters every meal in Santorini every meal.

Why not fly back through Athens back home?

Santorini was a good choice. Check out the “inland” towns for authentic restaurants. But the views outdo anything you’ve seen in pictures. You can walk/cab anywhere and only guided tour I’d recommend is the volcano cruise. Jumping off the boat into the bay under Oia was incredible with a cold beer.

Sit outside for dinner at Metaxi Mas in Santorini.

NJV Athens Plaza
Asteras Villas in Fira.
Hotels in Santorini might be a bit challenging in late November.

We are going early October now, got flights booked through British airways with only 1 stop in London each way. I was looking at the Anteliz Suites possibly for hotel in Santorini

We went to Athens, Santorini, and Naxos. All were great. Santorini was the most beautiful, but we enjoyed Naxos the most.

We just got back from Greece in October.
We went to both sides of Crete, Naxos, Santorini, and Athens. Flew in and out of Athens.
Athens was our favorite. An incredible city with awesome food. Naxos was great. Santorini was cool because of the architecture. Crete was alright, if I went there again I'd spend way less time there

How is the cab service around Naxos? Spending a few days there in May and want to venture out to some of the other beaches away from the marina.

New question. Supposed to arrive in Athens on a Saturday in October leave out of Santorini in the next Thursday afternoon. Should we try and move the flight back a day and squeeze in Mykonos or just keep as is and have all Saturday/Sunday for Athens and then the rest of the trip in Santorini?

So it would be Athens Saturday night, arrive in Santorini Sunday. Santorini 4 nights, fly out on the 5th day?
I personally think 3 nights is plenty in Santorini. It is a pretty small island and there are no beaches. If the place you are staying does not have a pool, you don't really have a spot to hang around for the day. You would be filling your days in restaurants and shops. As someone mentioned, I would definitely do a boat day one day. Do the hike across the island another day. Then you have a third day to visit more shops/restaurants.
In your case, I would try and fit a day/night in Mykonos and get the beach experience. It is definitely a different vibe than Santorini.
