Middle of May for 9 days. Flying into San Jose and renting a car. No plans, no reservations yet....just gonna wing it.

I have some basic ideas of where I want to go and done things I want to do. Definitely want to go surfing for my first time ever. Want to see the rain forest, go zip lining, hike the volcano, ride horses/ATVs on the beaches, eat some local food, explore some offbeaten places.

Any suggestions? Things I definitely should do. Places I should definitely avoid?

Go straight to Montezuma (make sure you catch the last ferry of the day from Puntarenas). Surf Malpias the next morning. Waterfalls outside of Montezuma...hike to Cabo Blanco.

Practice surfing. Head up toward Tamarindo and check a few cloud forrest things off of your list, chilled surfing in Tamarindo.

Drive to Arenal...crazy windsurfing spot on the way.

Drive to Puerto Viejo (don't stop in Limon unless you have to) on the Carribean south tip of CR to see how your surfing's come along. It's a dance club type town that's fun. Amazing waves.

zip lining

Don't waste your time or money. Zip lining is lame AF.You'll get real bored real quick, as in after the first line.

Zona II and the Sportsmens Lodge. You're welcome. Also don't let a croc get you while surfing!

Not if you go in Monteverde. You are wayyyyy up in the rain forest. It is pretty windy up there and if it is cloudy(and it usually is) it looks like you disappear into the clouds you are so high up.

We went here in Monteverde:

As already mentioned, Arenal/La Fortuna is a nice place to get this done. Its a 3.5 hour drive from San Jose airport. Roads are good to drive on just get extremely curvey and without a shoulder the closer you get to the town. La Fortuna has a great center of town with restaurants and bars if you want to get out at night. But the surrounding areas feature all of the outdoor activities you want: volcano, zip lining, rain forest, rafting, waterfalls, rappelling, etc... Edit: So if you end up here, just get a hotel/hostel in La Fortuna. You wont need your rental car once you get there. Whoever you book your daily activities through will pick up/drop off at your hotel. If youre staying in the center of town, everything is walking distance. If youre a mile or two outside of the center of town, cabs are $3 or $4 each way to get to restaurants/bars.

Tamarindo & surrounding area is great for surfing. Its only about 40 minutes from Liberia airport, so if you start or end your vacation in this area in may be better to use that airport. Edit: again, wont need your car once you get here if you actually stay in town.

Edit 2: not sure if youre heart is set on zip lining or if you want to squeeze in other activites. But we rafted the Sarapiqui River class III-IV rapids and it was easily the highlight of the trip as far as the daily activities around the rain forest went.

OP doesn't know how to surf but you want him to surf Salsa Brava?

OP if you do head that way, beware strong currents and shallow reef sections. The reef was literally raised up in several spots by an earthquake.
Try Playa Negra and Escuelita just to the north or even Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, and Playa Grande just a little further south.
Ask around PV until you find a guy named Beto Locks. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience to help make your adventure very memorable.

I did not recommend that break. We 'surfed' south of there on a beach break a couple of days. I say 'surfed' because mostly we just got our asses kicked. The waves were mongo. Every place we went we rented a long and short board. We just asked the guys we rented from where to surf and all over that country they were spot-on. The long board was a liability in those big waves since any missed wave turned into 45 minutes of trying to stay alive. I was a bloody frick, but we laughed for hours out there each morning and then did it again each afternoon.

We stayed in hammocks all over that country and that little town was killer. Drinking beer and watching the badasses surf Brava was one of the highlights of the trip.
