I have a business trip to NYC in July, and I'll have about 9 hours on a Wednesday morning/early afternoon to do whatever. I could also go out late at night around 9pm if I wanted to. It's my first time in New York.

I'm staying near Battery Park a few blocks over from Wall Street.

Any suggestions for what to do around the area? What's walkable?

I admit that I am a rural kid that is inexperienced with public transportation. I always rent my own car any time I travel by plane, but I understand that this would be a bad idea in the city. Any tips on taking the subway or getting a cab?

You could see a lot in that area on foot without even using the subway, but it's easy, cheap, and efficient to use. Buy a day pass. It's New York...what do you want to see?

All of it?

I want to eat everything too.

I don't really know. What's around that area? Looks like the World Trade Center memorial is there, so I'll check that out.

Could I make it to Times Square and back? What about going to Times Square alone at night after 9ish? Worth going?

I'd do WTC memorial in the morning, walk to Battery Park and take a gander at the Statue of Liberty, and walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Times square at night. You'd want to take the subway or a cab to Times Square from lower Manhattan.

Lunch in Chinatown or Little Italy.

Times Square is really easy to get to. Get on an uptown/Bronx 1 train near your hotel and ride it until it says Times Square. Should take 15 mins.

If you're up for a hike and like art, you could walk from there, cut through central park(can't miss IMO), and go to the Met for a couple of hours. It's really one of the finest museums in the world. I'm not huge about art but I love it. Or you could walk east from Times Sq and go check out the Top of the Rock for a good view of the city.

You might enjoy the Highline as well. Cool "park" on the old elevated rain line that runs through the city.

Battery Park is pretty much the most southern tip of the city. And b/c of that, it is semi isolated from the rest of Manhattan, cut off by the West Side Highway and Battery Park City and Wall St and the Brooklyn Bridge area. Which all makes for sort of an odd first trip to the city, especially since the time you'll have to roam will be in the morning, early afternoon.

But since you are so far south, get on the Staten Island Ferry. You can grab a few beers on it, head to SI. Don't get off, stay on it and just come back to Manhattan. It's free and will take you passed Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. It's a great bang for your buck experience.

B/c you will be so far south, it is the only section of the city not on the grid w/ numbered streets and avenues. But the subway is still pretty easy to figure out. I say don't even bother. Walk up to Chinatown, Little Italy, up to SoHo. Explore and pop in wherever catches your eye.

Food wise there is a pretty cool spot called Pier A in Battery Park City. There is also a PJ Clarke's around there if you want a burger.

You also mentioned that you'll be done around 9 PM, that's early in NYC. I manage a bar but it's up on the UES. Might be too far a trek, but if I can help, let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy your trip!

That area has a ton of things to do. Go check out Wall Street, walk through Battery Park to see the Statue (like another poster said), Freedom tower isn't too far (just go see the memorial the museum takes a while), and I recommend eating at the dead rabbit on Water Street, great food and drinks.

Two of my favorite things are nearly free. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge and have pizza at Juliana's (the crowds will be at Grimaldi's next door). Ride the Staten Island Ferry- great views. 9-11 Museum is nice but crowds can make it unbearable. I hate Times Square. Subway is really easy to figure out.

I went solo a couple of years ago and loved it. The subway is pretty easy to figure out, just know what direction you want to go by the last stop of the train. If you want to go North, and there is a train that ends at Jamaica/Queens, even though it sounds weird, take the train to Jamaica/Queens and get off on your stop. Once you get underground you lose track of which way you should be heading.

I had a few days to explore, I did Central Park, Wall Street, Freedom Tower, Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central, etc. Also just walk through the neighborhoods and pop in to any place that looks interesting. I would finish each night in Times Square, it is always buzzing with people/cabs/etc. I would leave TS and walk to Jr's for cheesecake then walk back to the hotel each night.

Also, if you are into it- check out the professional ladies. NYC has a plethora of talent, and its not some New Orleans backpage crap. Just saying...
