Looking @ possibly having to take a short hop (PDX-SFO) with them in the middle of an upcoming business trip. How is their service? Any experiences here?

They're fine, they didn't get that sized by being bad, crappy, inefficient or unsafe.

There are better airlines flying in the US and there are worse.

Best domestic carrier, will be flying them tomorrow from sfo to nyc. Think of the difference between fast food employees and chick fil a employees, that's kinda what it's like between virgin and the other domestic carriers

At the end of the day it's still flying through a carrier. Still gotta deal with TSA and the regulators. It's ok, better than most domestics but the idea is built more on image and display than anything. The interiors make you feel hip and cool like you are in a club.

The plan, for now, is to keep them as sepeate brands. Because each is so unique.

No, that is Alaska buying time to keep virgin passengers from jumping to JetBlue or a legacy carrier.

The cost to use the Virgin name is one percent of total REVENUES. No way Alaska can afford that. Besides there are a ton of costs associated with keeping two brands and separate fleets. Virgin cannot command the revenue premium like the big guys (corporate contracts, super premium F cabins).

Virgin was a great product but they never had the scale, or the leadership chops to succeed. Just take a look at the unmitigated disaster that is their Love Field operation.

They posted a few consecutive quarters of profits on the backs of low oil prices and then immediately sold.

Yes, AS is trying to keep pax from going to B6 with their new Mint product, but AS is also in bed with AA and DL (probably not for long with DL). So they're not quite at full war there. AS's main goal is to survive as a major independent and they bought VX as a defensive measure to stop B6.

But their idea is each brand is distinctive enough and will be operated separately for the time being with Ben Minicucci, the current AS COO taking over as CEO of the VX subsidy.

Hopefully AS management can handle the business side of VX better.

That has a lot to do with local politics. The city of Dallas gives SWA whatever it wants, including helping keep Virgin, Delta, etc. from getting too many gates. But I fly virgin outta Love over SWA anyday.

Agreed that virgin is the best (and by far imo) domestic carrier

Yeah, no. Virgin is by far the best domestic airline. Only other one close is Alaska which just bought Virgin.

VX got exactly what they wanted. CEO David Cush wanted to start an operation from DAL. They had to pay dearly for the slots at LGA and DCA to fly it, and now compete head to head with Southwest who operates 6-8 flights a day on each route with all the benefits of connecting passengers at DAL.

Not to mention down the road American operates another 8-10 flights a day on each route. As a result of all of this capacity local fares are rock bottom, and VX is operating with 60% seat factors (percentage of seats filled), industry standard is closer to 80%.
