Favorite "hidden gem" desination?

What is your favorite "hidden gem"/"less-traveled" desination? Whether it be something you stumbled upon while traveling, or somewhere you haven't been, but would like to go.
As some of you know, I went to Cuba, and it's not exactly "hidden", but its probably my favorite of the "less-traveled" variety. I also love the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, absolutely stunning in winter! I've been to Marquette a few times, and actually saw Apollo Ohno in a little Thia place while he was there for training.
If I had to pick one place I haven't been yet in the states it would probably be Apostle Islands Wisconsin for the caves. If I could narrow international down it would be between a trip to Buenos Aires, then on down to Patagonia, or somewhere in the Middle East.
On my trek back from Cuba I also stayed in Tulum, and while I know it's not exactly "hidden", I did kind of stumble upon it. I would absolutely love to return to that area for an extended vacation with a rental car.

Upper penisula of Michigan is nice, I liked north central Pennsylvania too. Very hilly and rustic.

Would love to get up there some day! Have not yet been to Canada at all.

It truly is amazing! If I could live there, just for a short period, I would in a heartbeat!I have not made it much past the mainstream cities of the Northeast, yet, unfortunately.

You are absolutely correct! Rolls of cigars in the Vinales region, bought from the farmers directly, 5CUC for 30, AND they made it back to the US. Much more memorable than a Cohiba, IMO. Rum was anywhere from 2CUC-10CUC for the normal stuff. Some of the better Havana Club was 40 and up. Made it back with six liters of rum.

Have an ex from the Philippines and have forever since wanted to go. My SO and I are currently deciding on our trip for December this year and it is narrowed to Eastern Asia, Eastern Europe, or Argentina. My ex was from Lapu-Lapu, which is where Magellan was killed, and also a part of Vasayas, I think it would make for an interesting trip.

I'm going to the Painted Hills in Oregon this weekend. I think that counts as a hidden gem, no?

San Juan Islands (Washington State) Not many Southerners know or go
All over Ireland, throw a dart at a map of the Island.
The same is true of Bavaria.
Yakushima, a smaller Japanese island south of the main islands.
The Big Island of Hawai'i.
The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica
Not all of mine are particularly hidden but they were to me.

Not really hidden, but I was surprised by how many people hadn't heard of Roatan. When I told them we were going, all they could think of was the mainland of Honduras.
Most folks don't realize how inexpensively you can rent a house on the beach and eat at local places up and down the beach.
Plus you have the world's best diving and snorkeling right out your front door.
And like you mentioned, Tulum is another wonderful place. We spent a week there this year and would love to go back.

Roatan is great and an incredible diving area.
Isla Mujeres is our latest gem. It's discovered but most stay in Cancun and miss out of the great little island a few miles off the coast. Like Roatan, it's a great value.
