Anyone have any experience with Uhaul? I am moving to Denver from Baton Rouge in a couple weeks and I was looking into renting a 20' Truck with a car dolly. Any advice would be appreciated!

Uhaul is very over priced .... I went with Penske and had no problem what so ever and it was like 1k cheaper also ( my move was from Baton Rouge to Princeton,NJ )

with box trucks, I always find get a bigger truck then you think you need on moves, because you probably need it

Driving your own moving truck that far? God bless you.

I drove the 18' ones a few times. People are assholes, pull up right behind you while you are reversing(clearly establishing the area) and then honk at you for not seeing them, etc.

Add in hilly/mountainous terrain, frick that. I'd rather sell all my stuff and buy new stuff.

This, no doubt. It's amazing how much unnecessary sheet you can fit in a house.

Just a tip, for a similar spend you might be able to find someone who will move your stuff on a hot shot route. Basically they will come pick up your stuff, load it into a trailer, and deliver it wherever you want. Then you can fly drive train it to your destination.

How does it work with a dealership if you are only going one way. How does that dealership get his truck back? Are there extra charges for doing that also?

Look into upack. They drop off a trailer at your house, you load it, they drive it. Its a huge trailer but you only pay for the part you use. Doesnt cost much more than uhaul, less headache.

As someone else mentioned....Uhaul is overpriced.

When I relocated my parents from Baton Rouge to Phoenix we flew them and my husband and I rented a 16' moving truck from Budget and drove it ourselves. Cost about $1400. Budget was like 3-4 hundred cheaper than Uhaul.

That amount includes the insurance(it was over $300 for insurance alone). Your car insurance will NOT cover the moving truck. For cross country moves I would highly recommend sucking it up and paying for the insurance.

Twice with no issues. The last time I booked a truck on line and went to check on it a few days early at the local dealer. They informed me I don't have a truck. Apparently they over book like the airlines and sometimes people get screwed. Fortunately I had enough time to go to another company.

Whoever you go with make sure you do a walk around noting every scratch and dent otherwise they will assume you did it and charge you for it.

The last two times I've used UHaul (both just to move stuff around in the city) I've gotten a call the day before saying the truck I reserved would not be available at the location I requested. In one case, I had to go a few miles further to pick up the truck, but they gave me half off AND didn't count the miles further I had to go with it. On the other time, they gave me a larger truck for the same price at the same location.

In my experience, Penske > anyone other than U-Haul > U-Haul.

I did New Orleans to NYC. 15' truck for 9 days was $1,013. Truck averaged about 10 mpg going less than 65 mph. Anything over 65 the truck would get sketchy. I didn't have any problems with the reservation or dropoff. The ubox option was nearly $4k but that included $500 NYC upcharge. The delivery timing is more of a range than exact which can cause scheduling issues with movers at the destination.

A 20' foot truck is a lot. I moved a 3 bed house sans sofa. I had a decent amount of room left plus you could load stuff in the car being trailered. Moving is a great time to get rid of accumulated shut.

The uhaul store is a great place for moving items too. Boxes, furniture bags, bubble wrap, etc were much cheaper than Lowe's or home depot.
