Is it possible to take a Europe trip and not use a credit card? Are there any pre loaded cards one could use that do not have overseas transaction fees?

And the ATM's usually have a better exchange rate than your local places. This biggest issue is if you have a daily limit on the card.

As long as you use a major bank and not Travelex or Europnet ATMs.

I have run into several places that don't take cash, only CCs with chips. Cash is disappearing over here.

Going through bank ATMs you will get market exchange rates less your bank's international fees. I found it good to pull out a bunch of cash and use cash where they didn't take Amex.

To answer your question everyone takes cash, but in some countries/cities credit is a 50/50 proposition. How you get the cash is up to you, travelers cheques are acceptaed at banks and hotels but they will hit you with an exchange fee. Getting cash at your bank in the states will leave you holding a lot of cash and susceptible to theft.

I would recommend a debit card and withdraw cash in country.

I'll add that most hotels want a credit card for reservations.

Pre loaded cards are always loaded with fees. Stay away from them. And forget about travelers checks. No one in Europe wants those anymore.

The Capital One 360 account has a Mastercard debit card with no foreign purchase fees or foreign ATM fees. Also there is no minimum balance requirement or monthly fee.

If I didn't have a credit card and was going overseas, I would bring two debit cards from different banks as a backup.

Traveling around with a debit card in another country puts you at more of a risk than other methods. Make sure you have pictures of the phone numbers you need to call should you lose it, it gets stolen or fraudulent charges be made. With a debit card, once the funds are withdrawn from your account the bank has your money while it's being investigated. So, make sure you know how you will dispute these charges and who to call if you don't have your card.

A security deposit on a rental car will also tie up actual cash instead of a portion of a credit line.

Why not just get a credit card?

I saved a significant amount of money that's higher than my cred limit. I realize I could just apply for another card but I'm just trying to review all of my options.

Call you credit card company and ask them to increase your limit because you are taking a trip to Europe. 99% of the time they will do it.

If you don't already have one with no foreign transaction fees, get one. Europe trip would be a great time to get a new credit card and earn bonus points.
Plus, most of the good credit cars offer rental car insurance, travel insurance and other trip protections that may come in handy.

Do your diligence for sure, but IMO a credit card is the way to go. Especially when you factor in the sign up rewards you can get with something like the Chase Sapphire

When I go the only thing I actually use is a debit only, but I use a CC as a back up and as what I use to book stuff online like train tickets, hotel, rental car, etc.

Side track will I be ok with a debit card without a chip? I have a CC with one but prefer to spend money out of my checking account

No, well most likely not. Europes been using chips for years so I would not take a card there without one that you plan on using regularly.
