Anyone ever done it? Looking at a trip next April, wondering if driving is a viable option.

Are you moving or just going for fun? I wouldn't recommend the drive if you're trying to go for a week, unless you have a tough time flying. it's about 17 hours (day and a half probably, unless you like to push it) and it doesn't get very pretty until the second day in virginia.

Just for fun. We'll be there for a week. One in our group has an issue with flying, but driving would also save us on airfare, which would allow us to stay in a nicer place. Looking at some Airbnb properties because of the full kitchen aspect helping with meals.

yeah i agree with cuse. break up the trip by stopping a day in nashville, especially if you've never been. lots of good places to eat there and things to see. make a day there and then head to DC. the first half of the drive will be boring to shite but the second half will be more scenic between nashville and DC until you get near DC.

check the area where your airbnb will be. make sure there's easy parking. you should be able to get around the city using just the metro.

Wife and I have spent a ton of time in DC over the years (she was in politics for about 20 years), so very familiar with the city, especially the Metro. This would be the first time going with our kids, they've been begging to go since they were little. Looking at a property outside of Arlington with offstreet parking.

Driving shouldn't be too bad, since we'll have 4 drivers in our car.

I'd want to kill myself if I had to spend 17 hours in a car and especially with kids.

Drove to Disney in Orlando when they were 4 and 8...now that they're 17 and 21, I think we'll be okay.

My dad did it while I was living up in DC. Spent the night in Tennessee on the way up to split up the drive. Drove 16 hours straight on the way back. Not too bad of a drive.

That's basically what we're thinking of doing. Possibly stopping in Asheville for the split. All depends on what everyone feels like doing.

The quickest way has the halfway point usually around Knoxville. Personally, I'd do something like this:

Drive NOLA to Chattanooga. Raft Ocoee in the morning (if running). Drive Chattanooga to Charlottesville. Then finish off the drive the next day. Plenty to stop and see along this route.

When people say kids I think of kids.

Still, that's a hell of a long way to drive and personally I wouldn't be looking for a 17 year old to be pulling a shift on the highway.

Safe travels whatever way you choose.

I have done it, it is a long, slow drive through Virginia, depending on where you stay, parking could be expensive or hard to come by. Southwest has direct flights that are pretty damn cheap...

If you do decide to drive, time it to avoid getting on the beltway at rush hour. That could easily add 2 hours to your drive.

If you fly, fly into Reagan. It typically has cheaper fares in my experience and it has a metro stop which provides easy access to the city. Dulles will require a bus transfer or Uber to get to the metro.

We always fly into Reagan. Actually if we were to fly, the property we're looking at is roughly 20 minutes from there.

Its a tough but doable drive, mainly because once you hit Virginia the speed traps (and radar scanners are illegal in va) are everywhere. So people drive the actual speed limit.

Make it to knoxville in one day and you can summit DC by the following pm.

If you go through Birmingham/Chattanooga, it starts getting scenic just past Birmingham and pretty much stays so till you reach DC. Basically, only your first 4 hours or so is a shitty drive through Mississippi and Central Alabama.

I've done DC to Tuscaloosa and back for a long weekend. Sucked and wouldn't do it again.

We did it a few months ago. Drove straight through to Richmond spent the night. And they next morning there before finishing a short drive to D.C. It worked out great. Richmond was a great night time and early day stop before hitting D.C.
