Not in my experience. They usually skyrocket.

They go up the closer you get.

Barring sales and price matches, they are typically at their lowest point somewhere around 21 days out. That's assuming loads are normal and you aren't traveling for a holiday or to/from a big event.

Depending on the route, you may see a revision lower inside of 7 days...but from my experience those routes and times are less than desirable.

I'll typically use Google and Kayak.

Yes....for example, if you were looking to go to Europe next summer, now is not the time to book....barring some super special deal that may pop up. Right now, the airlines have their standard high fares plugged in and they won't lower them until late winter/ early spring.

Supply and demand. There are less seats the closer you get to the flight.

if you are buying one ticket, sometimes last minute deals are really good.

I never really understood this.

I've flown on many flights that were at capacity, so for those, it makes sense the price goes up as you get closer and supply goes down.

But I've also flown on many flights that were 25-30 percent full at takeoff. The marginal cost of adding one person isn't much... so you figure they would do some discounting at the end.

Maybe there is a business reason, like they don't want to encourage last minute bookings.
