Differences Between Major Airlines

99% of my flights have been Southwest. Cheap and easy.
How does it differ from other major airlines like American, Delta, United... Baggage costs? Flight amenities? Etc.
I'm debating between Delta and American for a trip to Key West. American has better arrival times available but I'm unfamiliar with their policies.

There is no difference, they are all crap. Fly the one the best meets your times and budget.

you likely wouldn't notice the difference between delta, united, or American without seeing their logo. except maybe the biscoff cookies on Delta.
Southwest is different because of the seating and free checked bags

Their policies are very similar so it really doesn't matter except for price/timing/personal preference. I fly American all the time and they're usually nice to me (not to say there aren't some bad apples). Did the stopover in Atlanta not end up working out?

I agree with there isn't a big difference. I fly delta and southwest mainly and notice subtle differences. Since delta charges for bags, people seem to have more carry-ons that push the limit on size. If the flight is mostly full, the last few people to board have to gate check their bags. The boarding procedure is more organized with SWA. Delta has groups but people tend to stand by the gate entrance to wait.

Thanks for the info. Just booked Delta.
I ended up finding a roundtrip flight via southwest to ATL for $131. It came out cheaper to book an entire separate ATL weekend, hotel included, than to try to make a long layover on the same Key West trip.

Yeah, they all kind of suck. United easily the worst, I have status with American now so it makes it more bearable.

A beautiful summation of the truth, and of who you should pick.

Out of all the airlines you mentioned, I would book the cheapest one first. If they were all the same price - SW easily because of their friendly policies. I book and cancel flights on SW all the time. If I think I have a slight possibility of being able to fly somewhere - i make the booking. If I can't take the flight, I cancel it. In fact, I don't take 80% of the flights I book. I fly SW about 5-8 times a year.
In terms of service among the legacy carriers, it is Delta>AA>United. In terms of FF program it is AA>United>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Delta

I think we have a number of posters who have Delta as their primary airline (myself included). Northwest Airlines was my favorite and the best in my mind. Continental was awesome until purchased by United. American scares me because of their merge with US Scare. Southwest is many of my friends primary airline, but I am not a fan of the cattle call and seating.
Lastly the term for these people:
Delta has groups but people tend to stand by the gate entrance to wait.

AA and DL are far superior to United

I have status on AA. It makes everything 100x better and more bearable. I imagine people with status on Delta or United feel the same way as well.
It's always funny to me when the group 1-4 people are waiting to rush the gate and get pissed off when they call platinum. There's always some lady who mutters under her breath, "oh Jesus, do we really need to let them go first" haha.
