Looks like we are doing Vienna, Budapest (i have spents weeks in both) and Croatia (never been)...

We love good food, wine, nice hotel/resort, beaches...

The trip would be in the summer and include Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik and Mostar (Bosnia)...we are looking to include some more areas too and we would have a car

How many days are you planning? Where are you flying into/out of?

I stayed at the Le Meridien in split, it was nice enough and fairly affordable. Stayed at Amfora in Hvar, it was very nice. Rented AIRBNB in Dubrovnik but there are a couple pretty nice resorts.

Just a fyi the beaches are rocky for the most part. They are beautiful but much different than the normal sandy beaches most are accustomed to. Highly suggest splurging on boats in each of the cities, that is by far the best thing you can do while there.

Into vienna then dubrovnik. I thought i saw some sandy beaches.

Can you hire a private speed boad to jump islands? Or do you mean we drive a boat that we rent?

Last July the wife and I did 3.5 days in Vienna, then 5 days in Hvar and 3.5 in Dubrovnik.

-If you are active, and don't mind a bit of work biking from Melk to Krems was awesome. If you decide on it i'll look up the towns we stopped in.

-Flew from VIE to SPU via Serbia. Split has a really easy airport, and by downloading the Croatian ferry company aps I was able to buy my ferry ticket while we road from the airport to the ferry port. I'd recommend doing the same thing.

-Hvar hotels kind of suck (from pictures). I wanted to get more value out of my money so we decided to Air BnB. I am glad I did.

-Get some sturdy shoes if you plan on walking cross country at all on their paths. The stones really cut stuff up if it isn't tough.

-The beaches are pebble beachs, some cheap aqua socks are a worthwhile investments unless you have chacos or keens.

-the scenery is really awesome; really, really awesome

-Hvar was a great introduction to Croatia, but if I ever go back I'll stay on another spot on the island or on a smaller island. The town is known for its partying, so you get a bunch of geordies and loud Aussies. Not a problem or anything, but just as young drunk tourists have an affect on certain parts of NOLA they affect certain parts of Hvar.

-Go to a restaurant named stori komin. NYT Article: LINK

-Go to Lambik in Milna (small cove not far from Hvar town). If feeling adventurous walk from hvar to milna through the olive groves and farms.

-Do an island tour with Ilirio's tours. I usually hate tours, but this was just 4 couples on a speedboat and they bring around to caves, islands, different beaches, some cliffs to jump off from, etc. It was worth it, and was a great first day activity to get acquainted a bit with the area.

-The palkeni islands are pretty cool, but if you are looking for relaxation don't go to the island with the club (forget the name, club is the only thing on it). We spent most of our time on Jerolim. It has a beach bar with reasonable prices, and is half naturist/half clothed.

-Skip hula hula; go to falko beach bar instead

-In Dubrovnik take the northern ferry to kolocep and eat at villa ruza. Excellent scenery and food, and is an exception to my comments below. LINK

-Misc. thoughts on Croatia: Their cheap beer is pretty good. I read a tripadvisor review that said Croatia was "retard Italy", and that statement proved to be really true. The food and wine just falls short many times (the whites and rose wines were pretty good). Seafood again is good, but I've had better. I'm sure there restaurant industry will develop as their tourism industry develops, but it is something to keep in mind. You will still get pretty good value for the food (if you want certain dishes like lamb peka you usually need to order a day in advance).

I am sure I am leaving stuff out, so if you have any specifics please ask.

Croata thread from a couple of weeks ago

Check of Plitvice National Park, its really beautiful.

You can do a day trip from Dubrovnik to check out the fjords in Montenegro.

If you are driving from Budapest or Vienna to Croatia, you may want to stop in Ljubliana, Slovenia and/or Lake Bled in slovenia.

Zagreb is nice but its not as nice as Hvar, Dubrovnik or even Split.

Zagreb is a waste of time relative to the coast. Unless your flying into Zagreb, I wouldn't plan to spend any time there.

I spent two months in Eastern Europe and this was my favorite part of the trip. Lake Bled and the surrounding area is amazing. Beautiful, great hiking and some nightlife. Ljubljana is awesome too. Clean, great architecture, nightlife and food.

Great trip, good info below. if driving, do hit Bled, Bohinj, ljubljana in Slovenia.

Plitvice is an all day deal, we actually go to Krka.

North of Split, Trogir, Salona ruins, Sibenik, and Zadar are well worth visits.

South of Split, hit Omis, Brela and Ston (best oysters I have ever eaten).

We stay at St. Lukes in Split. Just out of the Palace, but close parking lot, walk out onto Riva and 5 minutes from ferry.

Hvar island, we usually stay in Stari Grad. Too much night party stuff in Hvar for us. Last year went on wine tour to Tomic Winery in Jelsa, that was good.

Mostar, we have used B&B Mooostar City Apartment No 1., hard to find, but they do have parking on site. Easy walk to old bridge and bunar bridge. Be sure to hit Blagaj, Kravica Waterfalls, Pocitelj - all between Mostar and Ploce/Dubrovnik.

Beaches mostly rock, further south more sand, there is a sand beach on Korcula and one near Dubrovnik.

There is so much to do and see, kinda hard without knowing what you like (history, art, architecture, active, etc...) We have been 8 times and headed for our 9th in May (BiH only 3 times). If you have some specific questions shoot me an email tigerskeet at gmail dot com and I'll try to help ( we absolutely love this region!)

This is key for a great Croatia trip. The road trip is beautiful and the highway system is pretty legit. Zadar is a personal favorite Croatian city of mine because of the Sea Organ. This also gives you the opportunity to check out the national parks like Plitvice, Paklenica and Krka.

You must enjoy Cevapi as much as possible!

Dubrovnik recs: Tobasco pizza (good and cheap), Dionysus wine bar (diverse selection of alcohol compared to most places and can be very friendly)

Great tips Foch. I'm looking to go solo this summer.

What do you think of the multi day sail boat/yacht tours on the Adraitic?

Driving in Croatia along the Dalmatian Coast is relatively easy and spectacular. Assuming that you are starting in Split, it would make sense to start there and take the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad. The ferries are easy to navigate and the timetable is online (Jadrolinija). Hvar gets very crowded in the summer, and there can be a wait for car ferries.

IMO opinion the best wine on the island comes from the Ivan Dolac area, on the south side of Hvar. Since you have a car, it is definitely worth a relatively short drive from Hvar through the Pitve tunnel to Ivan Dolac. The small tunnel was built around WWII and is an alternating one way tunnel. It's an experience in itself. Google it to see for yourself.

The drive along Hvar island is breathtaking. The lavender fields are usually still blooming in June, and the road gets a little hairy towards the western end of the island approaching Sucuraj.

You'll find that most restaurants in Croatia serve roughly the same menu: grilled meat (usually a "mixed grill" of assorted meat - cevapcici is my favorite), risot (rissoto), and obviously seafood (usually grilled or brodet (light tomato sauce). Adriatic scampi in brodet is one of my favorite foods. Pizza is extremely popular in Croatia, and we love Karlovacko beer (pivo). It can be bought at Kiefe's in NOLA. Croatian sheep's milk cheese (Paski Sir) is very good, as is their prsut (prosciutto) - but it's usually cut in very thick slices compared to how it's served in Italy.

Happy to share specifics of restaurants, etc. I'm Croatian, my family is from Hvar, and I'll be there in mid-July. Sretan put.
