Has the board booked any of their vacation packages before? I always look at their European packages on Trafalgar, but I'm always curious if I could piece it together better and cheaper. I guess I would also be concerned about being herded around on a bus day after day.

In my experience, you can always piece it together better and cheaper. Group bus tours are NOT my cup of tea....I can see how they might appeal to the very young and very old, or for a person with extremely limited travel experience or mobility issues who needs assistance with luggage and cannot manage train platforms, stairs, etc.

I'm allergic to being herded along with a group not of my choosing. Hell, any group, really. Fixed schedules don't allow for the serendipity of travel to kick in....the cool side alley filled with artisan shops, the awesome sunset that makes you late for dinner, the opportunity to see a show or concert you learn about just a few hours before. If I'm on vacation, I don't want a damn precision schedule. I wanna sleep late (or not), be free to choose exactly when and where and what I will eat, and to spend a ridiculous amount of time looking at one painting, or statue, etc.

Yeah. I think I would be fricking miserable. I've never been steered wrong by Tripadvisor, and I personally think we've had some badass trips the past couple of years. We generally like to hunker down in one place for at least 2.5-3 days.

Probably worth looking into for package deals to Mexico or another type of resort for a week.

I prefer at least a week, and I'd rather have two. I wanna settle in, see how the locals live, feel the rhythms of a place. I abhor speeding from "sight" to "sight", as though marking off a checklist or a bingo card. Who the hell cares if you managed to hit 7 countries and 10 cities in 14 days? You didn't experience anything...you just briefly saw it before moving on. Hell, if barely seeing something satisfies you, stay home and play with Google Earth.

Traveling in Europe is easy. Pick a city, find an Air BnB or independent small hotel/pensione. Find out what the place is like....go to a smaller town outside of that city for a few days of country life. What's difficult about that? Just go....you will meet people, learn things, and have unplanned grand adventures.

Or you can go with the grammaws and Taunte Neys on the bus tour, and listen to people you don't know talk endlessly about themselves....and their relatives you also don't know, and their grandchildren....and their grandchildren's friends. I did a short day trip out of Dublin to the Borne valley earlier this year (Newgrange, hill of Tara, etc). Impressive sights, a decent tour guide who was an archaeologist, but the people on the tour nearly drove me nuts. Nonstop chatter about life in Portland, a recap of every place they'd traveled so far this year, a blow by blow recount of a wedding that only one person in the group had attended.....the epitome of nattering, won't-shut-up Americans. We saw some amazing stuff: did they talk about the Neolithic passage tomb, the sweep of Irish history, the pseudo-real St Patrick? Nah, they just talked about how much they loved cloudy IPAs......

I used Costco Travel for my wife and I's trip to Hawaii last year. Never had one problem.

2 nights in Zagreb is wholly unnecessary. Zagreb is pretty lame, I wouldn't want to spend two nights there. I'd want an extra night at Lake Bled/Ljubljana.

You can easily plan that trip better and cheaper on your own.

I like to explore. I don't like to be led around by my nose and that's what this sounds like.
