Long story short, I'm graduating from law school this spring and taking the bar exam in July.

I'm interested in taking a short trip (week or less) the week after the exam. We are willing to travel anywhere in the country. Date would be first week of August.

I would prefer a trip that will allow me to "get away from things" and relax. Basically, I'm looking to decompress from the summer of studying and relax before I begin work.

I'm not a fan of the beach especially when it's the hottest time of year. I'd head up a mountain and do some hiking somewhere. Oregon, Utah Northern Cali. Second option would Napa Valley area. It won't be too crowded because the harvest won't be for another month or two, but the weather is almost always mild in the valley which is what makes it so good for wine grapes.

No. It gets hot AF in Napa during the summer unless you're at the southern end near San Pablo Bay.

Mt. Rainier will be beautiful in early August.

I was going to make this same thread except after my defense . I'm in the same situation as you: graduating in august, probably start work late august but want to take a weeklong trip. I was originally thinking south dakota, north dakota, montana or washington, oregon, idaho. Those are probably the best places to avoid the heat and humidity in early august. Let me know what you end up deciding on

Wallawa Mountains. The Alps of Oregon. Go to Baker City and stock up on beer at Barley Brown's and then camp and hike to your hearts content with very few people to bother you.

Went to a wedding in Seattle in July 2015 and it was fantastic. Its cruise season though so its not cheap, but outside of that the weather was great.

It all depends on your definition of "get away from things".....does that mean few people, lots of nature? Or does it mean relaxation & no responsibilities with lots of activity options (i.e., a city vacay)? Here's a vote for coastal Maine. Eat all the lobster you want, take a short trip on a schooner, do a little hiking, enjoy the weather & sea views...

Def. head to the mountains. Montana, Colorado, etc. Not that I have much experience with that area, but it sounds nice.

We've gone late summer to visit family in Seattle a few times in recent years and I love it up there this time of the year.

Napa will be packed in August and it will be mid to high 90s during the day.

Russian River Valley will be cooler.

One of the most underrated areas of the lower 48. Another is the Trinity Alps of N. Cal.

had plans to go there this June after backpacking the Sierras and visiting Lake Tahoe. Moved the whole trip to AZ, UT, and CO due to all the snow. Decent consolation I guess.

As soon as I discover a "new" place I go to Instagram to see how many tags it has...the fewer, the better.
Recent example, The Rawah and Never Summer Wildernesses in Colorado...everyone goes across the street to RMNP.

Newport, Rhode Island and check out the mansions. Nice weather along the coast there.

Portland: visit breweries, hike the waterfall trails around Columbia Gorge, drive up Mt. Hood, drive down to Astoria to the coast, smoke legal weed, could be the exact thing you need after the bar exam.
