Little River Canyon area and Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead Forest are my two favorite.

Car camping or backpacking?

I'm looking to take my 4 year old boy camping as well. I was looking into Oak Mountain, but I'll be interested to read the other responses.

Decent camping, shower/restroom facilities are ok. Nothing great but you can clean off quickly after sweating your balls off all day. Even camping this time of year it is still hot and humid.

Oak Mountain and LR Canyon are great choices.

Also there is a great little campground at DeSoto Caverns near Childersburg and interesting for children

I've not been, but I've heard the Caverns are great for younger kids.
