Has anyone spent time in this wilderness? I plan on going in mid/late June for a few reasons:
1) Most of Yosemite will still be closed
2) It's free and there are no reservations required for permits (convenient)
3) It's quite the consolation for missing out on Yosemite this year. Lots of exposed granite and TONS of lakes.
4) There are parts of it that should be accessible in late June (unbelievable snowpack right now).
I've got about three loops planned ranging from 30 to 42 miles depending on the snow melt that occurs by mid June.
If you haven't gone, and you like discovering new "slightly less traveled" areas then maybe you'll want to check it out as well. Apparently the trout fishing is damn good.
If anyone lives around this area or is familiar with it, I'm worried about snow and stream crossings in mid to late June. If not, I'll have a report when I get back. Also, what are your favorite camping spots?

You can google snow reports for Sierras. Not really sure how to read them but I would start there.
From what I've read about PCT hikers cross streams early in the morning for lowest level. Be careful, fast cold streams ain't no joke, I almost got into big trouble in Glacier Park one time.

I have been to the Virginia Lakes area, where we camped on private land. I did notice a couple of campgrounds by Mono Lake. They looked decent, but have never stayed there myself. No luck with fishing unfortunately, but I am to blame. I've never been in June, so I can't help with the snow or stream prediction. You're right to have concerns this year though.
You should read Dharma Bums before you go if you haven't yet. An appropriate book for your journey.
