Planning a trip up to Boston (and perhaps day trips to NH and RI). Starting to look at hotels and what area we want to be in.

We plan to do some sightseeing, perhaps find some Oktoberfest activities, and hit a Patriots game. Any hotel/area recommendations to be in the middle of the action at a somewhat reasonable rate? Any can't miss things to see/do?

Give me your e-mail and I'll shoot you a "guide" that I've sent to a bunch of posters.

Based on the OP I'm assuming you'll be renting a car?

There's plenty of decent and moderately priced hotels in the area, and Boston is so walkable and public transportation is so abundant that you can get anywhere you want to be quickly. I would check out:

Omni Parker
Westin on the Waterfront
Ames Hotel
Sometimes the W on Stuart has good deals

There are also much better deals on AirBnB or VRBO if you want to go that route.

No problem. Sent.

Also, you mentioned RI and NH....there are a ton of great places outside Boston but still in MA that are absolutely worth checking out, and it would be a shorter trip.

Frankly, NH isn't all that great, IMO. But Maine, RI (specifically Newport), and Vermont are all excellent places to check out if you have the time.

Got it, thanks again. Yeah, I've been to Portland and Bangor Maine and thought they were great.

May add Newport, RI as a possible day trip.

I worked in Newport for a while - really great area. About an hour and fifteen minute drive from Boston. October is a great time to be there because it's past tourist season too.

Good deal. Any Pats tickets available on game day for a discount or would it be better to score them ahead of time?

Looking at 10/16 vs Cincy.

Get them ahead of time and be prepared to pay. Even crappy seats are pretty expensive.

Also, getting in and out of Foxboro is a nightmare. Once you're parked, it's a really neat area - they did a good job designing restaurants and shops all right outside the stadium. But there is only one damn road that leads in and out of the stadium, so traffic is a cluster. Going to a game is essentially an all day affair because you need to get there 3-4 hours before kickoff, and it takes forever to get back to the city after the game ends.

I'll be in Boston in July for the 3rd time this year, and while there are still plenty of things for me to do and see in town, I'm also looking at taking a day trip somewhere (BF has his truck up there). I had narrowed it down to Portland, ME and Newport, RI.

I take it you've been to both, so which would you recommend? I've never been to Maine or RI so I'm excited by the idea of either.

I've definitely been to both, and there's really no wrong answer here as they are both great towns. It really depends on what you enjoy doing.

If you're into craft beer, it's Portland and it's not even close.

If you would rather take in some scenery and do tours of some historic landmarks, as well has hit the beach, then Newport would be a better fit. However, I will warn you that at that time of year, Newport is packed with tourists and if you're thinking of staying overnight, then you'll be paying an astonishing amount for a crappy hotel room.

I work at a microbrewery, so craft beer is always a plus (research purposes, obviously). I want to see a light house, though. A friend of mine from the Boston area mentioned that we could hit Portsmouth on the way back from Portland; does that seem feasible?

Errrr, that's kind of a bummer to hear. That coupled with the ticket prices and we may just post up somewhere in the city and watch it. Perhaps visit Foxboro on a non-game day.

Oh yeah, I would recommend Portland then. Tons of great breweries to check out there. After you've had your fill of beer and need food, go to Otto Pizza. Get the one with mashed potatoes and scallions. I know it sounds strange but it's killer.

And yes you pass right by Portsmouth on your way to/from Portland via I-95 so that's completely doable.

Yeah sorry to be the bearer of bad news. It's a horribly designed system.

And honestly unless you REALLY want to see the stadium, there's nothing in Foxborough worth seeing outside of a game/concert.

We just got back from Boston on Saturday. Stayed in the north end (little Italy) in an apartment we found on VRBO that was awesome! it was about 230 a night. Totalled 700 for 3 nights. Loved the area and would go back and stay there again. Walking distance to great restaurants, easy walk to the touristy sights. Check out vrbo and see what's available
