For those who have been there, post up. I live in Alpine but want to hear stories and see pics.

I've driven through Alpine about 24 years ago. Didn't expect to see mountains there. How far is Big Bend?

Really cool looking town.

That's pretty awesome that a gentle stream separates 2 countries

BBNP is about 90 miles from my house. I look out my back door and see mountains.

Yea, its only a water body. Life crosses everyday. Candaleria TX, had a foot bridge before 9/11. HSI took it out but they still cross every day. San Antonio Del Bravo is just across the river. Closest USA town is Presidio, TX 40 miles. Life on the border.

Rented a really cool house on top of a small mountain just outside Fort Davis a few years ago to watch the Perseid meteor shower a few years ago. Was spectacular . Then drove for FW where I live to BBNP last year. Scenery was even better than expected

Damn. That's awesome

I have El Paso as part of my work territory

Thinking of having the company pay for my flight and renting a car for the drive.

Say I want to hit that area the first or second week of August - how much sweltering heat am I looking at? Will it be better at some of the elevations in Big Bend? Would tent camping there be bearable?

It'll be damn hot in August. Forget about camping along the Rio Grande, that will probably be well north of 100 degrees every day. Even the Chisos Basin campground will be hot and that is the only place with elevation for camping (around 5,000 ft if I remember right). It's quite a bit cooler than along the Rio Grande but it was still pretty toasty when we camped there a few years ago in May. Nights are nice though, there is almost no humidity. And the stars are the best I've ever seen. There is a hike up Boot Canyon that gets to something like 9,000 feet. The top part is very nice, but no camping there. Honestly, I wouldn't think about tent camping Big Bend in August, and I do love the place.

Ft. Davis State Park is at 5000' and very nice in the summer......think Denver weather, warm in the day ....bout 92 or so w/ low humidity and lower 60s at night. Ft. Davis is about 1 1/2- 2 hours from Big Bend Nat. Park.

Yea Tigris has it right. I would not camp in August. Hot as hell. It was around 110 on the river this past week. If you do come, water, water water and did I say water. There has already been a hiking death this year.

My family owns properties in and around Marathon. My mother loves that town-I try to avoid going out there whenever possible.

If their last name ends with an ia or they know who Pablo Acosta is, we're probably related to them.

Marathon is a unique area. I spent some time on the Gage ranch one fall. Elk, mule deer, whitetail, antelope, audad sheep, coyote, mountain lion, etc.. it felt very much like being in the Rockies. Until the border patrol flew overhead anyway.

Had a good meal at that hotel as well.
