I have been to Rome before but it has been 5 years. Any must go-to restaurants?

I haven’t been to Rome in maybe 14 years, but will be there briefly in a few months. From what my wife has read, Rome is a place to skip the fancy places and eat at smaller spots.

I’m sorry I don’t have exact recommendations; I’m sure others will. But take that for what it’s worth.

Agreed. The less English there is on the menu, generally the better your chances are. Turn off the tourist path, go a couple of blocks, read the menus. Ask whomever is near the front what they like the best on the menu. You'll know.

I hesitated to chime in here because, unlike in Paris and some other places in Europe, the restaurants we go to in Rome tend to be on the casual side and not the high end gourmet places. That said, I recommended one of our favorite hangouts to someone on here yesterday- Enoteca Cul de Sac near Piazza Navona. Very good food and a great wine list.

Another favorite is Hosteria Costanza near Campo de Fiori. The food is delicious and the restaurant is in an old historic building built among the ruins of the old Theatre of Pompey which is where the Roman Senate was meeting when Julius Caesar was assassinated there.

If you're trying to get the lady to get Instagram impressions, I get going to tourist trap "fine" dining. I'd rather awesome friendly service and great *authentic* food than a Michelin star and foamed sea urchin. The pretension of "fancy" turns me off and is usually a cover for prices and not necessarily quality. I want to know where the locals go for special occasions, or on date nights, but that is probably just me.

There are always Bourdain suggestions. That's "The Layover" which is designed around about a 36 hour trip, which to me is more accessible than many of his longer, more involved episodes about particular cities and regions.

Also, if you check in at a high end hotel with a good concierge, they are typically great places to start. Please notice my qualifiers there; if you check into a business/commuter hotel, they won't give a damn, and will direct you to wherever they get kickbacks. If you are staying in something like a Marriott Autograph or Luxury Collection, they absolutely will direct you to awesome places.

we have reservations here during our trip in a few weeks. Recommendation from a friend who visits Rome annually.

I was there last year and would recommend Armando al Pantheon and Osteria da Fortunata.

Our favorite spot was Antico Arco, which is also located close to our favorite neighborhood Trastevere.

The best meal I recall having in Rome was a place called AdHoc.

We didn't go to Aroma because it was booked up months in advance, but we did get a spot at The Court which is their rooftop bar overlooking the Colosseum. Would recommend around dusk if only just for the pictures.

Like others have said, if you just dip off the tourist path and go into a restaurant down some alley where they hardly speak English, you'll get great food. We went to a place called Trattoria Pisciapiano Gioia Mia and explained in broken Italian to the old waiter that it was our honeymoon and he LOADED us with free appetizers, meats, cheeses.
