What's good? Don't want to hire a car as they drive on the wrong side.

I really enjoyed Plymouth. Took a train from LHR, but that may make for a long day if returning as well.

We've done London twice and both times, we would go to the train station and just pick randomly. Cheap and easy. I suggest Oxford. The whole town is the university with colleges spread throughout with pubs and churches in between. Perfect day trip.

Oxford is fantastic. I only recommend Stonehenge if you do the inner circle tour.

Bath and Windsor by train were good. Lots to see in both places.

Greenwich (prime meridian, Cutty Sark, etc.) was okay, but my favorite part of the trip was going on the Docklands Light Rail and returning by a Thames river ferry. Good urban sightseeing along the way.

Oxford will be the next one. Options are trains or one of 2 express bus services that run between London and Oxford.

Thanks for the suggestions

Will definitely do Bath. Between Canterbury and Stratford- which is better?

Greenwich is nice, esp if you're feeling too "urban" after a few days in London. The river ferries are inexpensive (don't bother with the more expensive tourist boats, the regular river "bus" provides the same view without annoying commentary or too many tourists), the ride is short & scenic. Observatory/Prime Meridian are up a small but steep hill set in the middle of a nice park; beautiful view on a nice day....and the town itself has the usual run of tourist shops. Maritime museum is nice for boat geeks & kids, though it is unairconditioned and sweltering beneath glass skylights on a hot day. We enjoyed Turner's Battle of Trafalgar (painting) immensely, mainly b/c it was set in an air conditioned room w/viewing benches.

I'd go to Oxford over Stonehenge, unless you have a serious fascination w/prehistory or woowoo Druidy stuff. Watch a few (or many) episodes of Inspector Lewis or Morse and you can track down the pubs featured in the series; there are even Morse/Lewis walking tours.

You could catch the train North to Ely in the a.m., walk around downtown Ely, visit the Ely Cathedral etc. Hop back on train head back down to Cambridge, it's similar to Oxford with a plethora of Colleges and it's an awesome town to tour on foot. Do a 1hr punting trip on the River Cam thru the Colleges along the river, there are 31 total in Cambridge...

Very nice laid back 10-12hr day trip from getting on train at Kings Cross till your return to London...

Just another option...

Agree. Oxford or Windsor. If you go to Oxford, you can also take a bus to Blenheim Palace (Churchill's birthplace).

It's a 3-hour train ride each way, but I had an awesome time visiting Dorset for a day. Just wish I could have stayed longer.

Train from Victoria Station to Dover, then catch the ferry to Calais (look back at the white cliffs). Spend the day and return.
