Domains Serene is superb.

Big Table Farm makes some excellent Pinot.

Cristom is another favorite too.

Penner-Ash Pinot has never disappointed. Very good juice.

Never actually been there. Just like those wines.

I am also looking at Wilamette Valley in Sept and am wondering the same thing. Looking for smaller boutique wineries. Do you stay in Portland and then make the drive into the vineyards or are there places to stay among the vines?

My wife and I went for our anniversary a few years ago. We stayed a night in Portland and several nights at a bed and breakfast outside of McMinnville. If we could do it again, we would have stayed one more night in Portland and then stayed a night or two on the coast instead of 4 nights at the bed and breakfast. The drive from Portland to wine country or the coast to wine country was not that far

Yes. Daughter used to live in McMinnville. Nice little town with a couple of nice restaurants. She suggested you try Durant or Domaine Drouhin for wine tastings.

You're probably 45 minutes from the airport in Portland. I would probably stay in the area you want to target versus driving from Portland everyday. This place was a cool older hotel with a very nice rooftop bar. LINK

Other Possibilities:

The quirky Vintages Airstream Hotels. Bella Colina in Amity. The Allison Inn.

I know nothing about the wine scene. All I can say is don't stay in Salem.

I went all over Oregon recently and did a bit of wine tasting, but most of it was around Roseburg. I did hit williamette valley vineyards in Turner, OR, and it was very nice, good wine, food, and views.

If I were me, I would check out wineries near the Columbia River Gorge, and make sure to visit wineries that allow you to take side trips to see some of the other natural wonders of Oregon - Crater Lake, the Oregon Coast, Bend, and Salem.

You have to throw in one ridiculous suggestion to see if people are paying attention. Crater Lake...

We plan on taking the Wilson River highway through Tillamook on the way into Portland and checking out Apolloni and Risdall Ranch along the way.

the other option is to take Hwy 18 and stop at some of the ones on that route. Is the drive through Tillamook scenic enough to justify that?

Tillamook itself is not very scenic. But the drive along the coastal highway both north and south of Tillamook is pretty spectacular. Pelican Brewpub in Pacific City has one of a kind views.

How are you getting to Tillamook?

Also, Degarde Brewing is in Tillamook. Fruited sours there are outstanding. I highly recommend the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Great place to get an ice cream. Nice gift shop and good food.

Don't forget the squeaky cheese!

They only sell them there, unfortunately.

I turn 40 in January and I’ve always wanted to go up there and spend time in Willamette Valley. I’m reading that a lot of wineries are closed in January and February. Has anybody been up there in January that can speak to what the experience would be like? We know it will be cold and the potential for winter weather but we’re OK with that. I just want to make sure the experience will be what my wife and I are looking for.

We could always do Napa but we are partial to Pinots from OR.

Went on a vendor conference there during October about 5 years ago. We stayed at the Allison Inn and can recommend that. Gorgeous views and great wines everywhere.

We went to Oregon several years ago. While in Willamette Valley we stayed at a B&B near McMinnville. Don't remember all the wineries we visited, but they ranged from boutique to larger ones. They were good, but after a couple days I was burned out on Pinot Noir.

A non-wine related site to visit is the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. The Spruce Goose is there. The museum is next to the an Air Force base. While looking at the outdoor exhibits, we watched B1 bombers and other aircraft takeoff.

Check out Le Peuy/Peu. Great B&B. We stayed there and lived it. Highly recommend driving Astoria to Lincoln City (stay 2 nights in different towns). Then Lincoln City to The valley. Drouhin/Arabella were our favorites. Ribbon Ridge is not as famous as other appellations , but all of the locals will tell you the best pinots come from there.

Went to Willamette, Astoria, Canon Beach, and Portland a few summers ago.

Canon Beach was amazing.

In Willamette definitely see:
Soter (Mineral Springs Ranch)
Ayoub
Beaux Freres
Eminent Domaine
Evening Land

Not Bad:
Penner-Ashe
Domaine Serene (too Napa country club for me)
Domaine Droughin
Anne Amie
Erath

Skip:
Eyrie
Carlton Winemakers Studio
Winter Hill

Seconded. Cannon Beach is the site of the best vacations I've ever had. The Oregon Coast is awesome on the whole.
