Anybody been to Tokyo, Japan

Consider going somewhere a bit less oppressively urban. Somewhere like Kyoto, Nara, Fukuoka etc. The real Japan is the outlying villages around the major cities, the beautiful seaside or mountain villages with temples and quaint ryokans. Imho, Tokyo gets monotonous after about three days. It's too crowded and every intersection looks the same.

Just came back. Did 3.5 days in Tokyo and 3 in Kyoto and thought that was perfect.

In Tokyo, you should definitely go to Ginza, the Tokyo Station area, Roppongi Hills, and Harajuku. Since you have kids, the area around the Tokyo Dome could be a nice change of pace. Batting cages, bowling alley, and a roller coaster are all right by and pretty affordable.

Kyoto used to be the capital of ancient Japan up until the 1600s so there are lots of historical places to visit, including Shinto and Buddhist temples as well as the palace with 1000 Buddhas.

Train from Tokyo to Kyoyo is less than 3 hours and about $120 per person each way

Yep, no more than 3 days in Tokyo. Then head south to Kyoto. We stopped at a resort town near mt Fuji called Hakone and it was the highlight of the trip. Kyoto also super cool. Nara also a good day trip.

It would feel strange to go to Japan and not spend some time in Tokyo. I've heard that it's an amazing restaurant town, and great things about the shopping. I'm glad to hear that 2-3 days is enough because then we could hit up another place to get a real change.

Yes, went twice.

Hamarikyu Gardens is really pretty since it's a great balance or urban/japanese garden. Odaiba is really neat for walking, the mall, and also views of Tokyo skyline

Agreed. This was my only escape from the craziness when staying in the Ginza area.
