The fiancée and I are going to the Saints game in London in October.

Our original flights were:
MSY 4:10p -> CLT 7:12p
CLT 10:05p -> LHR 11:05a +1

AA just changed their flight schedule and updated us to:
MSY 6:20p -> CLT 9:15p
CLT 10:05p -> LHR 11:05a +1

I purposely booked the earlier flight so I would have ample time to connect (duh). I'm also pissed because they have a MSY-CLT flight that leaves at 4:14p that they didn't put me on.

Do I have any recourse here to make them put me on the earlier flight, or should I be prepared to eat a change fee?

Frontier just screwed me over by turning a 3 hr non stop flight into an over nighter!

You should ask for an earlier flight, and they should give it to you.

I recently had the same thing happen to me with Delta on a flight from NO to Aruba. Since the change in flight was more than a 2 hour difference there was no change fee for changing to another flight which I did. Check AA policies to see if this is the case with them.

This problem I can actually help with so pay attention. The reason you were rebooked on the 6:20pm is American's IT system will automatically rebook you on what it thinks is an appropriate connection, in this case that is 50 minutes, even though there may a flight almost at exactly the same time as your original flight. With a schedule change of 2 hours, you are free to rebook or cancel and get a refund.

You can ask about them getting you on the nonstop MSY-LHR with this schedule change (AA6183) as your first request. If they are unable to do that, then you could ask to go through any AA hub that you want. There's connections around 2 hours in Chicago, DFW, or Miami as well as Charlotte. For a decent night's sleep, I'd suggest the nonstop or going through DFW. The flight from CLT is quick so you won't sleep as well as that long flight from DFW. If you just want your 4:14pm flight through Charlotte, request AA 732 for both flights (same flight number MSY- CLT and CLT-LHR). Actually if you wanted to leave in the morning, you can also do that now. This schedule change implies that even though you booked your afternoon flights you can change to any AA flight for free.

ETA: What dates are you flying there? I'll help post the flight numbers on here (it makes it easier for the agents)

You da man. Departing September 29th. They rebooked us on AA1870. I was thinking that we could just call and try to get on AA732 since that was close to our original itinerary anyway.

AA6183 would be awesome if we could pull it off. We actually got the flights for $860 back in March and have the nonstop coming home. Does the fact that it's operated by BA make a difference?

Just thought of this too, my fiancée and I are booked on separate itineraries. I figure that complicates things since we have to do it twice.

Good, I was right in my original guess that you'd be leaving on Friday . When calling in, first thing you should say is "I noticed mine and my fiancee's flights had a 2 hour schedule change on the way to London and I am wondering if we can be placed on the nonstop flight AA6183 departing new orleans at 9:05PM arriving London 11:45AM. We have two reservations that need to be changed." I'm not sure if AA6183 is possible just because it's operated by BA, but that would be my first request. Don't even mention that it's operated by BA and just see what they say. The British Airways flight is practically empty as well so that may help. If they say no, then go one of the options below.

AA1767 MSY 1:32 PM - PHL 5:19 PM
AA728 PHL 8:40 PM - LHR 9:00 AM

AA4620 MSY 1:55 PM - CLT 4:59 PM
AA730 CLT 6:55 PM - LHR 8:00 AM

AA1310 MSY 3:00 PM- ORD 5:41 PM
AA46 ORD 7:30 PM - LHR 9:05 AM (This is on a 787)

AA2358 MSY 3:57 PM - DFW 5:37 PM
AA78 DFW 7:20 PM - LHR 10:25 AM (This is a 77W)

AA732 MSY 4:14 PM - CLT 7:11 PM
AA732 CLT 10:05 PM - LHR 11:05 AM

I think the chicago, philly or dallas flights look pretty good. When they reschedule you, make sure you ask for two seats together as a courtesy of this schedule change. They can assign you two seats that would only be available at a cost if you went into your reservation online

Schedule changes are the best. You can move your flights to something that suits your itinerary better (non-stop, extra day, better connection airport, better times, etc.)

And airlines will do this without applying change fees or fare differences as a courtesy.

Okay, just got off the phone with AA reservations.

Requested the nonstop flight and got told no because it's a BA flight. Then requested a flight through a different hub and got told no because only the MSY-CLT leg was affected and they couldn't change the CLT-LHR leg.

I tried to push back that it was over a 2 hour change and I should be able to move hubs. She put me on hold for a while (presumably to talk to a supervisor, but who knows), and still wouldn't change it. Smells like some B.S., but whatever. Ultimately I got what I originally wanted: an earlier flight into CLT at no charge.

Thanks for the info Cuse

HUCA (hang up, call again) if you aren't getting anywhere is a good method for future reference.

After this I would've told them I need to think about my options better, thank them for their time, hang up and immediately call back like golfer suggested. American has some horrible phone agents, sounds like the one you got did not know what the rules were...

ETA: I've had some horrible AA phone agents within the past year that didn't know their rules, part of the reason I switched over to Delta. Pretty sure there's some comments in my file about me raising my voice and getting pissed off at them
