I am taking a 10 day trip to Germany next month, and I was looking for some recommendations of what I must see! I fly in to Frankfurt, and then I'll head North to visit a friend near Essen. I was gonna do a round about and go from Frankfurt, Essen, Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and then back to Frankfurt. Any tips would help!

Dachau was interesting. Views at Eagle's Nest were spectacular. Food at beer halls was surprisingly good.

I personally was very underwhelmed by Dresden. It's really only famous for being completely destroyed.

Devote 2-3 days each for Munich and Berlin.

I would also encourage you to go into the Alps, maybe stop by Salzburg.

These were the cities I was gonna try to visit:

Frankfurt
Berlin
Munich
Hamburg
Cologne
Dresden
Leipzig
Heidelberg
Weimar
Dusseldorf

Might be jammed packed, but a few of these cities are right next to each other. Might be able to knock out a few in couple days. I have a friend that lives in Essen so I planned on visiting him for a night.

Assuming you're taking Condor out of MSY please let me know how you liked it. The rates seem really cheap, even with an upgrade you it's still cheaper than flying Delta or British Airways. I'm planning on going to October Fest and possibly the Saints game in London in late September and was looking to fly with Condor.

Search the board for my review of Condor. Tl;dr I would do it again.

I actually found a flight from Delta for $1088, and that was round trip. I looked at condor but I didn't like the flight times, and it was only $100 dollars cheaper.

I am traveling solo, so I don't know how I want to plan my trip. This is my first time in Europe since junior high. I think I am just gonna train around and explore the cities on my own. Probably take some bus tours, and get recommendations from locals while I am there. I took German at LSU, so I am exited to be able to use it! Just have to brush up on it a ton!

I did 12 days in Europe(mostly France and Belgium) solo 18 years ago, and it was a blast. You'll be fine. There are a ton of people travelling around Europe solo, though most stay in the hostels. Breakfast at the hostels was a great place to meet other travelers and get recommendations on things to do. My best advice is keep your itinerary flexible. You may get somewhere and hate it, or you may fall in love with a city and stay there longer than expected. The latter happened with me in Bruges, Belgium.

I only got lonely a couple of times early in the trip before I got into my groove. It's a little overwhelming at first.

I definitely planned on doing the hostel traveling. I figured this would be a good way to meet people my age, and find out where all the hotspots are.

I am a little nervous, but I do like the idea of doing whatever I want to do lol.

If you are going to Munich, go ahead and hit up Salzburg and Hallstatt in Austria. Our favorite place.

I highly recommend Heidelberg. It's pretty much the quintessential "old German city".

Lived there a year and a half and loved every minute of it. Not sure of your age, but if you're doing the hostel thing I'm assuming around college age...in which case go to the park on the Neckar River near the Aldstadt and enjoy the scenery. You can thank me later

(and by scenery I mean a metric shite-ton of smoking hot Heidelberg University women. Some topless.)

There were people aged 18-50 in the hostels when I went to Europe, though most were in their 20's.

You'll definitely meet some folks and get some great recs on things to do and see. You'll also meet a bunch that are just there to party, and their only recs will be nightclubs. Most of those are Australians. I went out with a group of them one night, and they are fricking nuts, but great people. I keep in touch still with one of them.

Oh trust me I know. I took a multi-day tour up through the highlands of Scotland. Stayed in hostels, including one on Loch Ness. Was me at 33, and this awesome French dude named Ludo at 35. Everyone else was early to mid 20's (mostly women for some odd reason...not that I'm complaining).

Had one helluva time on that trip.

Honestly, you're most likely gonna regret trying to go to all those in so few days. There's nothing like being able to hangout in a city, meet some locals, maybe go to a party, or venture outside of town for a little. But one city everyday....you're not going to come close to seeing enough in a city to make it worth the travel time etc.

For a 10 day trip, I'd do Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich. Eh, I take that back I'd personally do Frankfurt, munich, Salzburg, and then see where you are. For someone single, you are really going to want 2-3 days in each city to meet people, explore bars, and check out the city. 1-2 nights in a city isn't enough, that's a half day plus one full day, then the next morning you are leaving again. That's not bad just to go somewhere small, but big cities like Munich and Berlin you will want at least 3 nights each Id say.

The alps are amazing so it's hard to not recommend that, but they are much better by car as it saves tons of time. Although, you may consider Munich-Innsbruck (middle of alps)- then Salzburg. That's a great triangle and Innsbruck and Salzburg are both 2 night size cities but you'd want a free day outside of town to do something most likely.

Those are all really good tips. I know I'm gonna spend at least a night in Essen at a friends house. I got a ten day German rail pass, so I won't have any problem getting around. I'm starting in Frankfurt, then I'll head to Essen and Hamburg then Berlin. I'll probably travel down to Munich and back up to Frankfurt to fly out. Maybe stop in Salzburg if I have time.

I have been to a few of those places. We flew in to Frankfurt and headed south. A day was enough to see what we needed to see in Frankfurt - Romerburg Square, the Cathedral, the river. Drive from Frankfurt to Munich on the Romantic Road and stop in a couple of the Medieval villages, especially Rothenburg. Munich and Bavaria were great. Lots of things to see in Munich - palaces, museums, and churches. The tour of Dachau concentration camp was moving. On a lighter note, go to the Hofbrauhaus beer hall. From Munich we went to Salzburg, Vienna and the Alps. Vienna was my favorite. We made a circle and flew home from Frankfurt. On the way back we went through the Black Forrest and stopped in Heidelberg. It is a cool college town with brew pubs and a nice pedestrian area. We did not go north of Frankfurt.

Waaaay too much here friend for 10 days.

You'll be doing nothing but traveling, not sight-seeing or enjoying.

Once you get to Germany, how are you then traveling?

Rental Car vs Train vs Bus?

You should concentrate on three or four cities of your list.

Ask your friend in Essen for some travel advice.

The City of Trier, Germany didn't make your list but I'd consider it.
