Does anyone use them? Pros/cons of your models? I'd like one, but how often do you need to change the batteries?

I have one hardwired to TV, but my pressure washing escapades recently put it out of commission. Shold I just go back with a hardwired one? Any brands/models I should know about? I am not recording, just streaming fyi. Thanks!

I have Arlo wireless. 5 cameras on an independent hub and I've liked them. No real complaints. They have motion alerts to your phone and record to a cloud.

I use Blink wireless cameras. Full 1080 recording to the cloud and batteries last about a year. Downsides are that the motion sensor is finicky (sometimes picks up flag blowing in the wind as motion), the clip length is only 10 seconds and there is a 10 second delay before recording another clip.

Overall, I would definitely recommend, but I'm sure there are other options that might be better.

Agreed. I went to lowes and purchased the verizon wireless wifi camera for $199.00. It was simple to hook up. The app was finicky and had a 3 or 4 second delay. The app only let me view at about 1/3 screen size with the phone upright, it goes to whole screen in pano. The image was decently clear and had decent night vision when you turn the brightness up to max.

The app has a few glitches and i couldn't get the stream to load after a few minutes. Unplugged, boxed, and returned. I'm going to look into the other recommendations.

My experience as well. It gets decent reviews and I'm not sure why.

I ended up getting some wireless IP cameras (Amcrest ProHD) and Blue Iris on my computer and phone. It works great. You have to run DC power to the camera. Picture quality and night vision are awesome.

Same here. Been pleased with Blink. It also allows you to view footage live from your phone, outside of it just recording clips.

My arlo system has been pretty decent with the motion detection, although I had to tweak the sensitivity a but. It takes a second or two for it to kick in, so if it's a quick fleeting motion, it will record but not show anything moving.

You can record from 10 seconds up to 2 minutes each time it activates. You can set up geofencing with your phone.

Regarding battery life, I just replaced the batteries in our most used camera after 8 months. I set up one a couple of months ago at our front door and it's still going strong.

Arlo here as well and have been happy with them, I have a base and 2 cameras at my house in the country, and a base and 2 cameras at my girlfriend's condo in town. I installed the ones at my home to keep an eye on things when I'm not around, and the ones at her place due to several vehicle break ins in her area. I haven't caught anything of interest at my house but the ones at her place have caught people door checking vehicles twice in 2 months since installed.

Battery life depends on how much activity your camera sees and how long you set it to record, all mine are set to 60 seconds, I may get one or two notifications for the cameras at my house throughout the day, mainly my dog walking by, and get several months out of a set of batteries. The set at my girlfriend's condo, which get's a lot of foot traffic and cars in/out during the day probably go off 15-20 times a day, those batteries have been lasting about 1-2 months.

It's not a perfect system but it was easy to install and has functioned well so far.

you know the motion sensitivity can be adjusted right?

There is SO much more to good motion detection than just more<->less sensitivity.

Some are limited to rectangular zones, while others allow any imaginable shape.

Some systems let you define exclusion zones, rather than just inclusion zones, if you need to ignore motion in a certain area within an interesting area.

Some let you define the size of "blobs" to be detected. For example, if a thousand pixels change, it's likely more interesting if they are clumped together rather than spread apart.

Some systems allow you to adjust frame blending, which can be useful if you can't outright ignore a certain area, but there is typically minor motion there like a tree. Frame blending helps it ignore most of the tree movement while picking up on other movement in front of it. This can also help to ignore changing cloud conditions, rain, etc.

Some systems give you ultimate control over zones, so that you can define areas closer to the camera with less motion sensitivity, and areas further away that you may be interested in with higher sensitivity.

Some systems allow more complex zone schemes with rules, such as "only trigger zone B if zone A has also just been triggered".

Some systems can ignore "overload" conditions, such as a camera reset or a bug crawling on it.

Motion detection is hard to get right, especially when reduced to just a sensitivity slider and maybe a few simple rectangular zones.

The problem with the Arlo system is the delay from the motion detector switching the camera on to the time the system actually starts recording. It's 3-5 seconds, sometimes as much as 8.

Because of that, you only see quick glimpses of people, or you don't see them at all. What kind of perp stops and lets a camera take a picture of him?

The motion detector also picks up people at the extreme corners very well, but won't get people in the center of the lens half of the time. Mine can get turned on by cars 100 yards away that only pass for a split of a split second, and won't activate if the mailman walks 5ft away.

And yes, I have the camera positioned correctly
