Will AT&T Eventually Phase out Unlimited Data Contracts?

My unlimited phone is the only reason I still have an account.

I have 2 unlimited phones (wife and myself) and pay about $160. I currently have a work iphone (govt job) that is also unlimited, so no issues with data usage. Technically, it should be used sparingly for personal use, but as long as I don't break any laws with it, no one is going to care.

I don't know if I will be in this job forever, but plan on it for the next few years. If I drop my phone, I can save $50/month.

Question is, is it worth to keep my contract for $600/year to essentially just hold on to the unlimited. Is AT&T going to take it away eventually anyways?

Still grandfathered in. I think like 50% of their customers are unlimited.

It depends. You may have unlimited, but they throttle you big time when you get way up in usage. I'd take a look at your current usage and then compare to other plans that are 10%-20% above that usage. I dropped my unlimited plan as it wasn't worth it based on my data usage, and i used a good bit.

Yeah this is discussed a lot. More likely than getting rid of unlimited, they'll get rid of the subsidized pricing for phones, which will make those plans less enticing. People on the unlimited data plans don't get penalized for it like the folks with mobile share plans, and it's literally the only aspect of the plan that makes it cheaper for me to stay on it.

which if you werent a jackass you could just connect to a wifi network. Then you woul donly need like 5 gb of data.

But yes it will com to a point to where when you come to a contract extension you "grandfathered" people will be forced out of the "unlimited data.

22 GB may not be unlimited, but I have not been throttled since they increased. I use 15 GB on average. I stream Netflix when I need to clear my mind during lunch.

Why is he a jackass if he is using the services he is paying for?

I'm on the unlimited plan and never use that much, heck I don't see myself ever using 22 gb. But I def use more than 5 gb on average. Wifi network at my work is horrible so I like not having to worry about it cause I have the unlimited plan. Also...I like being able to stream music while I'm driving or hiking(can't usually access wifi for either of those).

That's really the root of it all. A few people on this forum who aren't on the unlimited plan generally react to the grandfathered users in one or more of the following ways:

1. Jump at the opportunity to remind us that it's not truly unlimited because we're throttled at some point.

2. Remind us that it may be taken away tomorrow, as though that diminishes our enjoyment of it today.

3. Insist that most of us probably aren't using more data than what's offered in AT&T's newer capped plans, as though that's the sole reason all of us would be better off changing to a new plan.

4. Express outrage if we actually do use a lot of data, as though we're no longer entitled to it because they have to deal with caps created strictly for the purpose of monetization.

You people on wifi should be thanking us for not clogging up the wifi. I've done speed tests at work various times where 4G was faster than my work wifi. They've recently upgraded the wifi though.

I've been off contract for almost 2 years now. My next phone will probably be the Moto X Pure, which is $200 cheaper than the Droid Turbo 2. If I ever get kicked off of unlimited, then I doubt I would stay with Verizon. I'll use about 9.5 GB this billing cycle.

The only reason they don't kill the unlimited plans is they don't want to lose those customers going to another provider. It's a good business decision for the company as they have customers for life, and very few really hurt them with the cap. So I have no problem with those who are grandfathered in.

Jackasses why?

You don't honestly believe unlimited users are congesting AT&T's wireless network, do you? It's just a a monetization tactic on AT&T's part. C'mon Ramrod, you may be a droidfag but you're smarter than this
