Have a buddy building as well. He has HDMI cables to every room. Why?

I am doing CAT6 and cable to every room, telephone to some of them. I am also going to put conduit from the attic to my media closet in case I ever need to run anything else.

Why are you running phone lines?

More important than choosing the lines to run is making it easy to change and add them, so good call.

This^^^ and conduit to each location at least in walls you can't easily get to later like exterior or under a second floor.

Two cat6 for gigabit? I just don't see how that's going to help me in the future although it might be relevant now.

Right now I do very little streaming anywhere but the bedroom and living room.

Any other suggestions other than conduit? Do you leave the conduit in the walls and stub the bottom out with a panel or leave it behind the sheet rock?

I've got another question. I'm hanging my TV over my fireplace. My media closet is right behind the fireplace. What type of condouit should I use in the fireplace box that I don't melt everything? Obviously, the fireplace is a 42 inch basic fireplace with a steel conduit running to the chimney.

CAT6 isn't just for data. It allows you to use an HDMI balun if you want one main distribution point for video and a balun allows you to overcome the HDMI distance limitations. It also allows for future digital technologies as there will almost certainly be an option for those technologies to be carried over category cabling.

Yes. Low voltage rings with blank plates over them. Don't forget the string in the conduit.

Thanks. This is really good information. OK, so I'll send two Cat6 to each room. Coax as well. Doing telephone just to master, living room and loft upstairs.

Don't run telephone, run another Cat6, because you can use it for telephone.

Yeah, you can run that. I've found it to be a PITA to pull. YMMV. It's cheaper for the owner but harder on the techs in the field.

Just run cat 6 to multiple spots in every room and have it run back to a central closet or location, also known as a star or home-run configuration. Cat 6 can be used for internet, hdmi, or telephone. I would also run Coax all over as well, having it terminate in the same location. And while you are at it, may as well run speaker wire anywhere you think you may have surround sound or outdoor speakers.

ETA don't run telephone cable. Usually they just run Cat 5 and terminate it as telephone anyway. May as well make it cat6 in case you want internet or video there.

Cat5 will run these too. Cat6 just is future proofing unless you have some really long runs.

Excellent point - while not perfect, I would much rather have CAT6 in every room than HDMI - where are you going to tie in all those long runs of HDMI and how will you route it?

CAT6 as your network circulatory system - even if parallel to WiFi makes a lot more sense to me.

I'll echo what others said - multiple CAT6 drops is the way to go, and not just for gig ethernet. Someday 10 GB ethernet will come down in price and be affordable to consumers. CAT6 will be necessary to take full advantage.

Is shielded cable necessary for residential installation like this?
