Did anyone else's miner lose its mind this weekend and start consuming a ridiculous amount of data? It used 600GB Saturday and Sunday.

My usage was absurd so I checked and it had just gone off.

It's been tough going these last few months, but I'm still just letting the HNT stack up.

HNT, like pretty much all crypto, has been slumping big this year, but there is good news:

Helium Mobile

Nova Labs Signs Agreement with T-Mobile and Plans to Launch Helium Mobile, the World’s First Crypto-Powered Mobile Service

quote:

Nova Labs today announced that the company executed an exclusive multi-year agreement with T-Mobile, America’s 5G leader. The announcement comes as Nova Labs plans to launch Helium Mobile, the world’s first crypto-powered mobile service that will enable subscribers to earn crypto rewards for using the network while saving money. This industry-first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) collaboration with T-Mobile enables users of Helium Mobile to access both the local Helium 5G network created by the people, as well as the T-Mobile 5G network.

“Nova Labs is committed to building out a decentralized network. Our new agreement with T-Mobile gives our subscribers nationwide 5G coverage and enables us to offer mobile products and services that use both networks,” said Amir Haleem, CEO of Nova Labs and founder of Helium. “5G infrastructure can be accessible to anyone at a much faster pace by enabling the community to help build and use the Helium network, especially in hard-to-reach places.”

“We believe Helium Mobile is pursuing a very nascent and exciting market segment,” said Dan Thygesen, Senior Vice President of T-Mobile Wholesale and head of T-Mobile’s growing wholesale business. “T-Mobile is excited to support Nova Labs’ innovation in this new crypto-powered space by enabling their mobility on the nation’s largest, fastest, and most reliable nationwide 5G network.”

Through the Nova Labs service, Helium Mobile subscribers can opt-in to earn MOBILE token rewards for sharing data about coverage quality and helping identify Helium dead spot locations nationwide and save money on cellular data plans. While Helium Mobile is centered in a bring your own device (BYOD) market, Nova Labs is partnering with select cell phone manufacturers on specialized, crypto-friendly cell phone devices that will be more efficient at validating network coverage, earning more MOBILE token rewards for their users when compared to generic, BYOD phones. Commercial service is expected to launch into beta in Q1 2023 and will provide U.S. nationwide 5G coverage.

Looks like I need to get a radio for my FreedomFi.

Hate to bump this embarrassment of a thread, but I wanted to give a quick update on Helium Mobile. They had planned to launch the service at $25 for unlimited, but at the last minute they dropped it to $5/month! The list of supported phones is short on the Android side (Pixels and Galaxies), but looks like most iPhones are compatible.

I can attest that the service does indeed work, though I have run into data throttling at times. Not sure if that will continue.

Also, if you turn on mapping you can earn Helium MOBILE tokens just by using the service. I've been collecting like 4k/day, which at present value is worth like $1. Tough to beat a phone service that is not just super cheap but actually pays you money to use it.

Of course, now that I'm putting it out there the whole thing will likely go to shite.

I signed up for the beta a while back. I'm just south of BR, not sure why it would tell you it's not available. Maybe a capacity thing?

why do people look the other way when it comes to mining and climate change?

Not sure what you're talking about, energy usage of crypto is a huge issue. Plenty of people bitch about it and plenty of people working to make it more efficient. Lots of chains are proof of stake which requires far less energy than proof of work. Helium kind of uniquely uses proof of coverage which requires almost no energy. A "miner" burns about 5 watts.

Also I think a lot of people would be surprised at how much energy the "traditional" financial system requires. Crypto could very well end up significantly reducing the impact of the financial sector.

If you believe and/or care about that stuff.

I figured out the problem. I'm using Google Fi and Helium on the same phone. Fi uses an eSIM for voice+data, while initially Helium required me to use an eSIM for data plus a pSIM for voice/sms. My phone could only have 2 SIMs active at once, so when my Helium pSIM was active I was only getting 1mbit data on that network (I had disabled Fi data).

Things had changed since I started the beta, and apparently now Helium can do voice+data on just the eSIM. I chatted with Helium support and they were able to move my number from the pSIM to a new eSIM in just a few minutes, so now I can have both my Fi and Helium eSIMs active, make and receive calls and texts on both numbers, and use the Helium eSIM for data. Which, by the way, is giving me 200+mbps on the t-mo UC.

Given the price (even when it was $25, but $5/month for voice plus unlimited data is just absurd) I did not have high expectations but so far I am absolutely blown away by the quality of the service AND the technical support. On top of that, in the last 17 days I've earned 82k MOBILE tokens presently valued at $0.00025 x 82k = $20.50 so I am actually being PAID to use this service. I realize this is not sustainable and my rewards will drop drastically as they keep adding subscribers, but this is insane at the moment. I really cannot recommend Helium Mobile enough even without the token earnings. Tough to beat $5.

Fat Batman, I have 2 invites to give if you think that will help you get signed up.

Was thinking about setting this up on a spare galaxy s20 fe to hotspot for data in my truck, but looks like it's not supported. If I upgrade my pixel 7 pro to the 8 I'll check back.

ETA: or idk, i might be interested in adding on my current pixel just for getting some MOBILE while the getting is good.

I noticed a week or so ago they doubled the daily MOBILE reward. I'm getting ~9k a day now. Also, looks like we are going to be able to start using MOBILE to pay for the service. Which looks like at current rates it'll be basically free plus still building a pile of MOBILE.

Same here. I think they booted a bunch of bots so the total rewards are split between fewer real users.

Yep, this is awesome, free phone service plus earning crypto. And this gives some utility to MOBILE which will hopefully increase its value. I don't know the details of how it will work, I wonder if they will burn some?

Not sure. If related to the nationwide launch last week it's kind of delayed.

I'm just letting it ride. I hope HNT, IOT, MOBILE, and SOL all keep blasting off.

Still taking off. This is absolutely insane. Kind of pointless to talk about dollars when it's so volatile right now, but I'm presently on pace to earn more than $200/month in MOBILE just for using the cell service.
