i use "automate-it" (FREE in play store) to fire up waze when my phone automatically connects to my car stereo via bluetooth and to close it when the BT disconnects.
i have it set to 'alerts only'.
its so nice..i dont ever think about it and i get the POLICE REPORTED AHEAD when i'm daydreaming and going 80 mph on the interstate to remind me to slow down.
i use both waze & google maps..i think waze has a much better UI for selecting alternate routes (along with ETA) than google so when there's traffic, its waze hands-down.
plus google maps is slow to respond to waze incidents..it will get them but usually 5-10 minutes after it hits waze which often is too late to avoid gridlock.

I use waze every day. Have a android tablet installed in my dash as my car stereo.
Data usage per month is < 0.01 GB.
Last road trip it was 7/7 on speed traps.

How do you listen to FM radio? Do you just burn through data on apps like IHeart Radio?

It hardly uses any data. I run it all the time, and don't even notice really. Waze is definitely the way to go.
It uses significantly more than Google Maps according to this article. LINK / I guess a lot depends on how much you drive, but at 115 kb per minute times 2 hours of driving a day = 13.5 Mb per day or 404 Mb for the month. Google maps would clock in at 161 MB for the month with those numbers. Depending on your data plan that may or may not be significant.

Factory system still installed behind dash. I have ford sync so tablet runs through bluetooth.
Still can cycle through Sirius and am/fm

I'll grab a screenshot of my data usage in a bit. Like I said, mine automatically runs every time I'm in my truck so it should give you a good idea of data usage

used Nokia HERE a couple of week ago on trip to Galveston. I like it because you can download the maps (from states to entire countries) for offline use. Only thing I didn't like is that it routed me through Houston instead of straight to Galveston

I actually have USB OTG hooked up to a microcontroller. Have an app to control a relay board for offroad lights, etc. Didnt even think about an OTG FM adapter.

Do you leave it in all the time? Even in 100 degree weather?

Does anybody make in-dash wireless charging docks for tablets? If not, someone should.
Edit: Nevermind, I found this mod that uses this charging plate. Pairing any random charging plate with a cheap molded dash piece is probably a better approach than selling them together as one product.

How much data does waze use?
Nowhere near enough to hurt you on data. I use it while patrolling all day.

It's been in there for 3 years no issues. All I did was put an antiglare shield on the screen.
I actually looked into the wireless charging but my Lg tab doesn't have it. Some of the newer ones do though.

Is there an app that provides an interface for that tuner?
Also im assuming you have to have a bunch of usb splitters so that you can both run power to the tablet and have that transmitter running to the usb/mini/thunderbolt port?
