Looking on Amazon Prime Day. Is it good for basic computing, internet, email?

It's good for what you described as long as you don't specifically need microsoft programs like Office. I'd always recommend a $300 Windows laptop over a $300 Chromebook, but if you can snag a $200 Chromebook, might as well.

I've seen at least one or two for $199. Always sold out.

We have one, and if that's all you're going to use it for then it is fine. I really like mine, though I completely underestimated how much I stored things on my laptop. You can't really do that on a Chromebook, but it does have USB ports for external drives, and there are plenty of cloud storage options.

I paid $150 for mine on Cyber Monday last year.

Can't run office on it?

No, but I just installed the Google Docs and Drive apps and it works nearly as well. I rarely need it for that though as I have a work laptop with me most of the time. It's strictly an entertainment device - email, internet, Chromecast to TV, etc.

I've never really tried, but I don't think you can install anything on it other than Apps from the Google store. It only has 32gb of storage. It's basically a tablet in the shape of a laptop. I prefer it over the kids' iPad.

Yes, great for basic stuff. Do yourself a favor and get the Toshiba Chromebook 2. It has the best screen of the chromebooks by far (excepting the $1,000 Pixel).

Can you save google docs as word docs? Or at least open them via word and save them that way?
Just checking that Toshiba, it has 4Gs of RAM - high for a notebook.. I have only 8 on my current laptop that is falling apart.

both.

but the easiest way is to open the doc on gdrive and 'save as docx' or whatever format you want

More functional and cheaper than any iPad.
Highly recommended for casual browsing

4GB is plenty for a Chromebook. Remember, it's not running a bunch of Windows services in the background.

It'll be fine to browse, check e-mail, basic google docs, youtube... Just not at the same time.

Haha got it.

I'm going on a trip soon where I will be staying in some less than desirable areas and don't want to bring my Mac, but wanted something to bring along and I don't have a tablet.

Maybe i should get some kind of tablet instead, probably would use it at home around the couch more too.

Yea, but the processor seems antiquated as well.

2.58-GHz Intel Celeron N2840 processor

I'm looking for something like this, just not sure.

Not antiquated, just extremely crippled. That's why the RAM is not important past a certain (low) threshold. There's no way the CPU could handle enough of a workload that it needs that big of a buffer. It's kind of like increasing the size of your backpack even though you're only physically able to carry 20 pounds of books.
