I am in the market for something for the man cave/basement. The room is 22x28. I have a bar in there, ping pong table and shuffleboard. The room has 4 windows so it does get light. I used to have an 55 inch plasma. My viewing distance is about 12-13 feet. I was thinking initially of going with a 75inch tv, but my last purchase was a plasma, so I am woefully out of date on what is in now.

Then I was thinking about going the projector route with a screen. The room is primarily used for sports and movies. I would say 60/40. Any advice is appreciated.

I put a 100" projection screen in my media room, and have not regretted it at all. It is not nearly as complicated as you would think. I have a 54" LED on the wall and if I want to watch a movie/game I can just lower the screen in front of the tv and turn on the projector. Very seamless and easy to do, and it's pretty impressive. My viewing distance ranges from 8-18 feet.

BenQ Projector - $799
Elite Screens 100" motorized screen - $215
Denon S910W - $579 handles sound, inputs, and has 2 outputs for TV and Projector

If you are interested in 4K you will have to go the TV route.

I believe 4K is his budget. Should be able to put a nice system together for that. I believe my final price was in that range and it included full Polk surrounds and a 16' sub.

No, my budget is 4,000. Don't really want to spend more than that. I know next to nothing beyond 1080p (4k, UHD, etc). So my options are:

a tv

or

projector
screen
receiver
speakers

I never understood the allure of a projector. What's better about it than a good TV screen?

Nearly 25-30% bigger for a fraction of the cost?

Price per inch is the big draw here. You can do wonders with a sub-$1000 projector up to 10'. Try that with LED or OLED.

And, a basement mancave one of your better applications for projector, as you can really limit outside light.

Like someone already said, way bigger for the price. And it's generall a sharper picture since there's no small spaces between each of the pixels like there are on a tv

this

i had always believed the opposite, but then again the last two projectors i saw it felt like i was at the movies. it was incredible. 100% reversal for me. Brighter, sharper, smoother. Nothing to debate- get the projector

If you paint the walls gray, you don't need the screen.

Less installation headache, less cost.

I have a $300 ViewSonic 720p projector, and it's a monster for sporting events.

I bought an HDMI splitter, a 50' HDMI cable and a bracket to mount my projector. All in was less than $500.

Bigger doesn't always equal better. The right room with the right screen and projector can be bad arse but that shite cost $ to do it right.

I agree. You can spend a fortune and go nuts.

But you can also get setup and have something that's enjoyable for you and impressive to 95% of the world for very little money.

here is the newer version of the Viewsonic i got my son for gaming in his room. LINK

It's been a beast of a projector. His old projector went through bulbs like once a year. This projector was installed in 2014 and is still on its original bulb with no signs of letting up. Very quiet fan as well. The LED projectors just aren't anywhere as bright as DLP yet.
