These things had so much potential. It's like they designed these for single people that can't find their keys. It's bad enough that the anti-stalking measures makes it easy for thieves to be alerted that there's an airtag and find it, but it doesn't even appear that you can share tags with a spouse - which is crazy.

Anyone else use these things on kids and expensive tools?

As you said they've been designed for locating lost items but not necessarily stolen items or for tracking people.

I am anxiously waiting for cheap trackers that use LoRa networks like Helium.

Am I correct in thinking it alerts you when another iPhone comes within range?

I do exactly this, but with Tile trackers. One advantage is that, particularly outside the US, Android is far more popular than Apple iPhones. Tile works with both.

I have an airtag on all of my luggage, in my ex-wife's expensive purses, in my passport holder, on my kid's bike, on my truck keys, etc. Been using Tile for almost a decade, no real complaints. There is a lot of selection in terms of format (wider and skinny, or lots of range and thicker, etc.)

Before I got my 10yo an Apple watch, when I wanted him to bike back home, I'd just go in the Tile app and ring the tag on his bike, which he'd usually hear if he wasn't inside someone's house. That was his bat signal. Sort of useless, because I knew within biking distance of the house, there were only three or four places he would go, but it gave me the knowledge to fact check him, "I know you left XXX's house 20 minutes ago, and it's a three minute bike ride."

Get them on sale (valentine's day, father's day, etc.) and you can get four or five of them for under $100. There is actually a New Year's sale going on now.

I put Airtags on each of my younger kids for our trip to NYC a few weeks ago. My biggest fear was them somehow getting lost in a crowd on separated on the subway. Never had to use them, but it certainly gave me peace of mind. Will probably use them in this way when we travel moving forward.

Yes, usually I'm the last phone near the tractor so the app will show the location and the last time it was pinged. If someone moved it and a phone hit it I would see the updated location and time. The down side of the app is there doesn't seem to be an alert if someone else's phone were to ping it, which in my case would indicate a trespasser.

I have AirTags with medication I have to keep on hand at all times. If I leave my house without it, a notification pops up on CarPlay saying it was left behind.

I have them on small things (keys, wallet, Apple TV remote)

We have something called a jiobit the nanny uses on the stroller when she takes the toddler out for long walks in the neighborhood, which has real time tracking of where they're at.

The thing I hated with the Tile was once the battery ran out, it was trash (at least the version I had). When we make our way back to Disney this year, we will most likely go with the AirTag for the stroller and older kid. Although we will be comparing them, and the jiobit referenced in another post before deciding what we'll go with.

I have one on a wristband (looks like a watch) for my youngest. He has a tendency to wander off. He's gotten better, but I still put it on him if we are going somewhere like a sporting event. I like the airtags b/c they can ping off any iphone. It's been helpful before when I've left things behind like airpods. However, I prefer the size variety of the Tile. I really want one in my wallet. But I am curious what the coverage is like with Tile vs Airtag if something is lost. I feel like there are many more iphone users than Tile users so the recovery of a lost tile might be harder.

If you turn on "Family Sharing" then the people in your family group can indeed see and use them as well.

Not for an airtag. Unless something recently changed, this is the biggest knock on them imo as the location isn't something you can share.

Oh - sorry my bad - I have them for multiple people in my group - but you are right I am the only one that can see them...

I forgot that fact as I'm usually the one they reach out to for everything anyway...."Can you ping my phone", so I forgot that I am the one who has all the control.

I seem to think there is a delay in being notified that an AirTag is near your location. I rent Turo cars and this one guy I rent from puts an AirTags in all of his cars. It usually takes about 1-2 days before I am notified that I have an AirTag near my location. If I had to guess, apple has it set up to where if the signal is continually utilizing one specific apple device, then it lets the iPhone user know.

The delay in notification is nice, in the event that you are using them in case of theft of the item. This at least gives you time to locate the device without the thief being able to find it and remove it in the same time frame.

If Apple were a person, I would consider it to be psychotic that they don't allow parents to share airtags.

my 21yo daughter (no pics you reprobates) has an odb2 5G thingie in her car that only costs $10/mo from tmobile so i can see where she is.

she lives in chattanooga which is on the other side of a big mountain that is always half-closed due to construction and the thought of her running off the road in the middle of the night plays through my mind constantly so this 'sort of' gives me peace of mind.*

*sort of because it will ping me at 1am and tell me she's out driving around in the middle of nowhere and dad sits there wide awake watching her car until i see it turn onto her street.
