So hypothetically, if you paid for internet only, and hypothetically put a splitter on the line into your house, and prior to the cable box requirements from all of the companies going digital were able to access basic channels on your TV through just a cable, would buying your own box somehow let you have access again or are these things locked down?

The cable companies have just been able to fully transition to all encrypted digital, and that won't be going away. You will have to pay for TV service.

Google has already started working on a set-top box for this very reason.

I'd definitely prefer to purchase one with the UI I prefer. The way the technology market is the boxes would be pretty cheap with constantly upgraded tech. Plus I wouldn't have to pay $10 per month per box for some piece of shite.

I posted in the Poli Board Thread.

ATT/DirecTV are going to make boatloads of cash on this.

Better equipment, massively available, better pricing.

That is assuming they allow some to be coded for neutral use.

I still don't see how this was prevented before. Tivo has been a third part box for years. I don't know why other companies like Google haven't done this before. Can anyone educate me?
You still need to rent a cablecard from your cable company. The FCC is trying to replace cablecards with a software solution, basically. Cablecards are expensive to rent, it's expensive to build devices that accept them, and it's all totally unnecessary and restricting.

Many think we will see a TV revolution much like what happened when Ma Bell was required to allow phones/devices from other manufacturers to use their phone lines.

Cablecards are expensive to rent,

I have used Microsoft Media Center with a cablecard for the past 8 or so years and it costs $1.99 per month for the card rental, so that is not true at all.

Microsoft had it right way back then, but it's not for just anyone as it takes someone that is a little tech savy to get through small problems, but I've had multiple TV's working off of one DVR long before all these current iterations have come around. I will be very sad to let this system go once the cablecard is no longer supported. 1 computer and 4 Xbox 360's working like a charm...

Congrats. Some charge twice that or more. Some even charge ~$20 just to mail you the card. Some add other charges such as "outlet fees" that hide the real cost of the card. Regardless, even if you're paying "only" $2... do you like getting fricked out of $2 every month for absolutely no reason?

No reason to be sad. The proposed rules would allow a similar setup plus many more, and the cablecard and its fees won't be necessary.

Haha, screw you Cox. I only use you because you own the rights to the infrastructure. Your management, innovation, and customer service skills are worse than the government's. I welcome tech companies getting to spruce things up a bit.

They have to protect their product from being stolen and a cablecard is a very small price to pay to be able to access premium channels with an independent device.

I know a lot of people think it's OK to steal TV from the cable company, but they built the infrastructure and I understand economics and all of these technologies would not be available if they couldn't sell them.

I dabble in Kodi and the like, but I still pay my cable bill because it has value to me. At the moment it is a diminishing value, but I can't get rid of it just yet.

Ah, yes, but in EVERY OTHER INDUSTRY THIS IS AN EXPENSE. Leave it to the cable industry to turn securing their own product into a revenue source. And then they made you feel so good about it that you're here defending it.

How does a gas station secure their product? They install an expensive camera system. How would a cable company do it? They would install a special device on YOUR vehicle that allows you the PRIVILEGE of buying their gas. And then they would make you lease that device.

How does a power company secure their product? They just install a little security tag on your meter. How would a cable company do it? They would come inside your house and install their special power receiving device on each appliance and device in your home that requires electricity. And then they would make you lease each of those devices.

That's not what this is about, at all. Quite the opposite, it's about stopping them from stealing from their customers.

Is the guide in 1080P or is it 480x340?
Hmmm, not sure. It changes its look depending on whether or not you're in the HD stations.

quote:

Can you skip ahead 30 seconds at a time?
The skip ahead is more than 30 seconds, but not sure how much.

quote:

Is the remote instantly responsive to your inputs?
Over 90% of the time.

quote:

Can you set it to view only HD channels?
I don't think so, but I would never use that.
