In a three-to-two vote, the FCC has decided to move ahead with a proposal that could drastically change the cable set-top box industry. The decision may have far-reaching consequences for how cable customers watch TV — ultimately allowing them to go through third parties for their set-top systems, rather than being tied to the same company they use for cable service.

The proposed rule changes will now move into a comment period — where businesses and customers will be able to weigh in — ahead of revisions and a final vote, still some months away.

For all the cord cuddlers, this is pretty big news. Instead of renting a shitty Box/DVR from your provider, you would be able to buy a box from Apple/Google/Amazon et al and they would have their own UI for the channel guide.

Are they all shitty? The ones we get from Suddenlink are great. Of course, i probably don't know what I am missing.

Interesting. How would this affect Dish? I hate their DVR.

Shouldn't be that hard to do, they already do it with cable modems.

The problem I see is the volume of people that will do this and then blame the cable company when their special box fails.

the x1 box i have is 'ok' but it still crashes way too much.

its the only 'wired' box in my house. all the other tvs have chromecasts (including the tv with the cable box) and i cast watchespn, hbo, etc to them and in a pinch, i can surf the channel guide on my phone and cast my screen to watch 'live' cable tv for channels i dont get with a chromecast savvy app.

if xfinity would just provide a 'cast' function, my problems would be completely solved.

Why do you hate their DVR? I love it.

I'm assuming this will be handled better than cable cards?

Love my DirecTv guide and boxes, but this is definitely welcome news. Competition is good.

This is my question. How is this different than using Tivo now?

i.e., what was preventing third party developers before if Tivo could do it?

I thought Tivo was in addition to your cable box, not a replacement for it?

TiVo requires a cable card from your provider, which you plug into the TiVo box. Once you do that, it's TiVo's GUI but your cable provider's channels.

Is the guide in 1080P or is it 480x340? Can you skip ahead 30 seconds at a time? Is the remote instantly responsive to your inputs? Can it accept voice commands? Can you set the guide to view only the channels you pay for? Can you set it to view only HD channels? ETC ETC ETC

I've never understood why Time Warner doesnt just buy Roku and use them as their set top box.

The UI on the TWC Roku app absolutely destroys the UI they have on their rental boxes. For whatever reason it even has a more robust and timely On Demand system.

You probably haven't thought about the fact that if TWC bought Roku, then you would probably have to rent your Roku from them, which would be terrible. And then the platform would be locked down to where only TWC-approved channels could be installed, which would be even more terrible.
