I'm looking to get one around $100. It can be around 256GB as I'll put most on the cloud for storage. What am I looking for between brands and specs? I heard Samsung is one of the best. What makes them different?

Samsung
Intel
Crucial

Those probably do the most testing and validation.

I would buy Samsung.

So it's just consistency?

Samsung is the only comoany that designs and manufactures every single component of their SSDs.

The OCZ ARC100 is a decent budget line. For general use, you'd probably never know the difference between it and a "nicer" drive.

Otherwise, the brands listed above (Samsung and Crucial especially) are quite well regarded.

They're so proud of them that they offer a 10-year warranty on the 850 Pro.

Stop and think about that. The warranty. On a storage device. 10 years. And it's priced at a premium, but it's quite reasonable.

Well that is an overwhelming vote. I like easy decisions. That was my first choice as well.

I forgot about the write cap on the warranty. That makes it much less reasonable. I'd probably hit that cap in a quick 15-20 years.

Actually, based on my current host writes on my 16-month-old 840 Evo, I'd be out of warranty on a 850 pro right at about 10 years (i.e., after 5 years of sitting in a junk drawer in my house.)

Be sure to have adequate RAM to help avoid unnecessary writes due to the use of virtual memory.

How much is that?

No. That's an overblown issue. Never reduce or disable your pagefile. You obviously want adequate RAM for a multitude of reasons, but not specifically to avoid SSD wear.

Thanks!

This is their "Trion" line though- it's their low-tier drive. Still going to be significantly better than any HDD you've ever used. If you're debating HDD vs SSD, this one wins. If you're focused on how good an ssd you can get compared to other ssds, this isn't the one. That said, on a budget, it should be OK for most people.

I picked up a Sandisk 240gb for $60 on Amazon because that's all I need.

Fry's has the 850 EVO on sale today in 250gb and 500gb.
