I understand from what I've read that Home seems to have the capability to have a deeper, more contextual conversation with you compared to Alexa. It also appears that Home allows for a whole home audio experience where you can stream music from one source to multiple Home devices.

Having said that, I'm a quite content Amazon Prime Member. I use Amazon Music from time to time to stream music in the house, and also use Amazon Prime Video often. While I use G-Mail and Chrome, I do not use Google Music, Google Now, and use iOS devices for mobile and tablet use cases.

For someone whose looking to begin replacing some light bulbs and find some smart outlets for the home as a way to break into automating my home, would it be better in the Tech Board's opinion to go with Google Home (or wait until it goes on sale), or just pop for two or three Echo Dots to begin this process?

I understand Google has much more potential to polish their device and some strengths from music streaming and AI/ML standpoints already. I also know that Echo is-literally-a more proven technology that a lot of folks have talked up here at this point in time.

I also know that I can get 3 of them for around the same price as Google Home.

What say the Tech Board?

I'd say for you dots probably make the most sense. For someone like me who uses google play music, has chromecasts, and uses google now and all that exclusively it was a no brainer to go with the home.

That and there's no denying Google's assistant is levels above alexa. You can ask google so much more than alexa.

google play music,

Without looking (I've been an Apple - never used iTunes and Amazon Prime member, along with Pandora and Spotify - both free acccounts), what is the cost for Google Play Music?

I believe I pay $9.99 but the main reason I pay for it is for YouTube Red. I actually use spotify more for music.

It is $9.99 for single account and you can do family plans now for $14.99. That is for all of the unlimited stuff including YouTube Red.

How does google play compare to Spotify? Aka, Is spotify replaceable with Google Play? Apart from getting used to a new service, would I miss spotify?

I'm not sure what YouTube Red is ... (only recently heard of it during unveiling of Google Pixel XL) ... assuming it must be for movies?

I can google - just typing right now.

I have spotify and I think it is great because I have it downloaded on my work computer and usually build all my playlists at work. The mobile interface could be a little better, especially a search function within your own playlist. Would like to hear what Google Play users say about the interface.

I have zero complaints. It does everything i need with my music.

However, I don't get huge into the pluses/minuses of different music apps. It lets me stream unlimited, download unlimited, create playlists, search for things like podcasts or anything like that, download songs/playlists to listen to offline. I find the library to be more than sufficient. I can access my music from any device that has the app. Has desktop capabilities of course as well. All things I imagine the other music apps provide too.

Basically all i really need out of a music app.

I'd think most people watch from their phones more than a computer. Also you get background play and offline viewing capabilities.

that probably wont even take google 3 months to get on board with 99% of the apps most people would use. I definitely wouldnt make my decision based off of that.

It's really really good - also, keep in mind that Google pays artist more than Spotify or Apple Music... so if the crap ever hits the fan, and artist ever get fed up and leave, they tend to stay on Google music.

I also like it because I have a lot of friends in the business (friends with St. Paul, Brittany Howard, and Chris Fryar) - so I want to support them as best as possible, and I hope others do as well.

In Conclusion: I used to use Spotify, I migrated to Google Music. Offline Radio, ease of playlist on all my devices, and music selection are all top notch, and I can not rave about all of it enough.

So ironically enough, for Prime Users who own an Alexa Device, the new streaming music service they premiered is only $3.99/month.

Does anyone have any early reviews? May be an interesting competitor as many folks-myself included-are pleasantly surprised at how well Amazon Music did in limited use compared to other options.

I used to use Spoitfy now I use Google Play Music mainly because I watch a lot of Youtube and Youtube Red for no additional cost is great. Also they extended Youtube Red features to Youtube Kids which my 2 year old watches. I really only have two complaints about Google Play Music. I don't like the UI I prefer Spotify. I also don't like how Google Play Music handles queuing songs. With Spotify if I choose a song from a playlist my queue is empty and I can build it from scratch with songs from any playlist or songs that aren't on a playlist. The queue only has the songs that I add. With Google Play Music the queue starts with the entire playlist the song I'm listening to is in and any new songs get added to the end. I really prefer the way Spotify does it.
