Where I live, the only way I can get anything close to decent innernets is to use my phone as a hotspot.

I am planning to purchase a new smart TV of some sort and want to know if the iPhone will run the Netflix, Amazon Prime, ETC.

Will I need an Amazon Fire Stick, for instance. Need a tv in the 46-50" range. I have DirecTV but still have an analog box. May need to step that up as well.

Help me please. I am not tech savy in the least. The last Television I bought was a Sony that weighed about 300 pounds. TIA

Don't get a smart TV

Get a regular TV without smart features and buy a fire stick

I'm not going to say don't get a smart TV, because the market is flooded with them. I will say just look for the best TV you can find with the features (other than being "smart") that you want and buy that. If it happens to be smart then so be it. You're going to want a Fire stick or other dedicated streamer anyway. Smart TVs do suck compared to any set top box or stick.

It's going to be costly if you aren't unlimited on Verizon already because video eats data. Their unlimited plan is the best that can be found, but they don't offer it anymore so the only way to get it now is to jump through some hoops and pay a premium to get it somewhere else.

If you have unlimited Verizon, then go for it. They have some restrictions that none of the other carriers have because they were given a lot of spectrum. Those restrictions don't allow them to restrict tethering. If you don't have unlimited with Verizon, I would check to see if T-Mobile works in the areas that you frequent because their plans offer the most tetherable data. At&t would also be a good option for unlimited data since you already have DirectTv, but I don't think they allow tethering on that plan and you would always have to connect a device to the TV through HDMI unless you skated on the TOS and bypassed their tether restrictions.

Thank you. Just the type of information I am looking for. I certainly don't want to spend money on bells and whistles that are irrelevant due to my internet situation. I am currently using 36gig a month and it is costing me out the wazoo but Verizon is the only service even close.

Wait, you use you phone as a hotspot, but you have no internet? Or do you have wifi?

Hotspot might not mean what I think it means. I use the iPhone's wifi as my sole internet connection. It runs my laptop and, hopefully, will run a Fire Stick or something similar.

If I understand what y'all are telling me, the smart tv's features would be a duplication of what the Fire Stick does, or am I way off base?

Not all smart TVs are the same. I ditched my set top box when I got a smart TV with Android OS.

True, they are getting better. Roku is built into some TVs now. I guess if you find a smart TV with a legit set top box OS like Roku or Android you can just roll with that I was really talking about smart TVs with stand alone systems.

So do you have internet at your home without your phone?

Phone uses "cellular" signal for internet unless you have it going over a WiFi signal from your internet router.

Making it a "hotspot" is basically turning it into a WiFi router.

Is your data capped on your cell?

Yeah my most recent tv has roku built in and it's no different than having a dumb tv with a roku plugged into it. In fact it's nicer because one less device cluttering up my counter space.

Ok, why no internet? Geez, just ask your neighbors for their WiFi password.

There are threads about how to get internet even at such places I think??

I don't remember what it's called though.. There's also silly satellite internet I think, ha.

Since you have direct tv you could also switch to att and get their new unlimited data plan on your cell. Not sure if it's cheaper than what you pay or if their service is as good. LINK

Any ways, just get the best tv deal you can find. Smart tv features are often slow and limited and its best to have a device like a Firestick or Roku streaming stick.. But like someone else said.. You probably will wind up getting one because most tvs are smart and probably same price.

My closest neighbor is 5 miles away and he doesnt get internet service either. Tried Satellite and it sucks. Verizon is $$$ but it is relatively fast at least. ATT phones do not work here.
