When I went to the Apple Store, the sales person pulled out his calculator and compared the price for NEXT versus buying the phone out right and signing up for service. There was no difference .
That's because 2 year contracts are designed for the worst case, which is everyone upgrading to a high end phone every 2 years. Switching to Next will save nothing for these people. The people who buy low end phones, or who buy high end phones but keep them longer than 2 years will save some money.

So with Next, how do phone upgrades work. I just upgrade whenever i want? How does that effect your bill?

Can't give you exact numbers, but the general idea is:

10GB data: $100
Line 1 fee: $15
Line 2 fee: $15
$600 phone over 20 months: $30
$600 phone over 20 months: $30
Total monthly bill: $190

12 months later, upgrade 1 phone with another $600 phone, pay off the balance of old phone ($600 - $360 = $240) monthly bill stays the same. 8 months later, the original phone that didn't get upgraded is paid off, monthly bill drops by $30. 4 months later, that phone is upgraded with another $600 phone, monthly bill goes back up $30.

What is the most data that you have used in a month?

AT&T throttles the unlimited plan. You're unlikely to use over 15gb/month for 2 people

LINK

4G LTE customers with unlimited plans aren’t throttled until they reach 5GB of data. However, these customers are throttled for the remainder of the month at all times of the day and night regardless of whether the network is congested.

Checked it both ways with a close friend that works ATT and I am defiantly over.

Sorry. I'm not exactly sure what you are saying here. You can check if you log into your account. You don't need a close friend. And by "over", what do you mean? Over what? Because if you are going over the 10GB, you'll need to get the next tier data.

Exactly. I think this is going to hurt ATT, not because they are offering some sort of terrible service, but because people are too stupid to sit down and actually do the calculations.
This, the Next program is solid, I was an early adopter on it with AT&T.
I love my Nexus 6 but I also love being able to upgrade to the newest version yearly.

At Sprint, there is still such a thing. Sure make fun of Sprint all you want, however their service has improved tremendously in the areas that I use my phone the most.

And all at a much better price point too.

My last 3 phones were free smart phones on the 2yr plan. Every other year for almost 8 years, I go to the AT&T store and get a new phone and pay $45 a month.

On the Next plan my parents both pay an extra $17on top of the $45(Data plan)

I'm not very good at math but how is pay an extra $408 (per phone for 2yrs) a better deal than me getting one free?

So does this mean I lose my unlimited? Is this what they came up with to get me off of my unlimited plan?

I'll bail if that happens. ATT, much like Comcast, is starting to piss me off.

No you will not lose your unlimited...

I have unlimited and signed up for the next plan today.

They said eventually in the near future if you don't get on next and want to keep your unlimited, the only option you have is to buy the phone outright every two years.

So what changed about your plan? Do you just get a 24-month financed phone added to your bill with no other changes?

Because you never got a free phone. Those subsidies were built in your bill, you just aren't aware of it.
