Rumor: AT&T will end two-year contracts at the end of May

Though we have confidence in this information, there’s always a chance that unforeseen issues will change the plan, so be sure not to treat this rumor as official.
As of right now, credit checks are run for any current customer who wants to switch from the standard two-year contract to the Next program. If the customer’s credit check gets declined, they’re reverted back to a two-year contract. So given that signing up for Next is somewhat difficult for consumers already, we still have no details as to how credit checks will be altered when Project Alice comes into fruition.
Our sources also tell us that AT&T still has no plans to offer unlimited data packages to its customers.

I have a 790 credit score and they told me my credit wasn't high enough for NEXT.

With the way people use data now, I don't see them doing this again for a long time, if ever, again.
Getting out of the whole two year deal is pretty cool to see a major carrier like ATT attempting though.

If my family can no longer do two year phone exchanges, I anticipate a departure from AT&T. They will lose many customers if this is true. It's ridiculously expensive anyways.

AT&T Next knocks customer's heads off in exchange. I predict that the law of unintended consequences here will be that MVNO's see an explosion of growth. People will settle for Hotspot and WiFi speeds and lower Data speeds in exchange for lower prices and BYOD networks.

What does this mean? Next is a Buy with financing plan, the old contract method was the Lease plan where unless you upgraded regularly you were paying for more than the phone cost. Unfortunately it looks like instead of keeping choice for consumers we're going back to a one size fits all solution.

You have no clue how it works do you?
Next is a lower monthly price on the plan then you basically finance the phone interest-free for whichever Next plan you choose. You can also choose to upgrade quicker vs the 2 year plan.
The 2 year contract you are still financing the equipment by paying more monthly for the plan. There is virtually no difference depending on which phone you go with.

Exactly. I think this is going to hurt ATT, not because they are offering some sort of terrible service, but because people are too stupid to sit down and actually do the calculations.
Maybe it's just me, but I doubt I'm upgrading my personal phone when my year's up. I'm fine with the Nexus 6, and I don't feel like keeping up with the Joneses, and it will shrink my plan like woaaah.

This would suck, since I have unlimited data from being grandfathered from the iPhone 3g time. Two year upgrade is the best because you get a phone for 200 and upgrade at 2 years and sell your old one for basically the same cost you bought it for.

You aren't selling it for the same cost though since the average 2 year plan cost $25 more per month per phone than the Next plan. That's on top of the $199 you put down.

That's the mindset ATT will be going up against. He's selling a 800 dollar previously owned phone for 200 dollars and treating it like a win/win, and that's only if it is in good condition and/or is a hot commodity that keeps it's value.

You are financing the phone on either plan because the days of phone companies subsidizing phones is over since they cost too much to justify that business model anymore. It was one thing when Nokias were the rage and they cost the companies like $150 to give away. You can make $150 back quickly. Not so much $800.
The difference in the two years vs the Next is you have more options on the Next plan. You can upgrade even before your Next plan is up if you pay off the current phone with a balloon payment.

So, Next is actually better for the consumer? I've never paid attention to the numbers as I've never felt, in the past, that I had any real choice.

It's more different than better
2 year contract = Lease, you get the most value by upgrading regularly.
Next = Buy, you get the most value by using your phone as long as possible.
There are a variety of other factors at play like reselling your phone and the discount you get based on the size of your data plan, but for the most part they are similar options and better is really determined by how often you upgrade your phone.
