Are Apple users so incapable now that they can't spend the 2 seconds it takes to flip the usb cable? I like Apple (MBP, iPad, iMac user, Apple TV user), but come on.

As for the headphone jack, that is an embarrassing idea.

Great, so we'll be able to listen to mediocre quality iTunes MP3s on bad headphones but it'll be superior because they're improving on the 3.5mm jack that is standard in consumer audiophile headphones? WTF?

It's just a nice addition. People don't have to pay attention to do it. Wouldn't it be nice for USB to be the same way?

Why is a good idea so terrible to admit that it was a decent way to go? Oh, right, because it's from the wrong company and we shouldn't inspire competition...

No I'm fine with Apple doing whatever they want. It'd be nice if they could get on board with a little uniformity for the rest of the industry, so that those who want to try Apple products aren't dissuaded from doing so because of the investment (new apps, accessories, etc.). But instead, they'll just keep making the same thing prettier and marginally better to ensure there is no crossover.

I know it works the other way for them too, wherein they keep people from leaving, but long term I think they're going to need to learn to play better with others.

The mini and micro USB jacks with their trapezoid shapes are less susceptible to this, but they're still a pain to deal with, and I think about how much better Lightning is every time I have to deal with USB of any kind. The upcoming USB standard is supposed to follow Lightning and have symmetric jacks IIRC.

Well then companies should have pushed this long ago and beat Apple to the punch.
They did. It's called the 3.5mm jack.

The micro USB cord is designed to fail because they are cheap to replace. Any small mechanical plug is going to fail eventually, and given a choice of the socket on the device failing or the plug on the cord failing, they chose the cord.

There are hundreds of headphone companies they could buy for 3billion less. Instead they opt for the silly fad brand.

How many headphone brands come with a music streaming service and Dr. Dre?

I had a Motorola SLVR with iTunes before iPhones were invented and it had no 3.5mm headphone jack, just a mini USB.

That was fun. But hey! at least it had a MicroSD slot!

Anyway.... this is just a stupid rumor.

I don't understand the disdain for this idea. I see it as a reasonable opportunity to remove a piece of hardware from the phone thus making it lighter and adding more space for battery. I'm sure there will be a 3.5mm to thunderbolt adapter for those with hifi 3.5mm headphones. I personally would like to see both the 3.5 mm and the thunderbolt removed and transition to a truly wireless device (Wireless charging, bluetooth headphones, wireless sync)

Apple supplies headphones with their phones so I would assume that they will supply compatible headphones if they move in this direction.

I'm sure they could get away with it if they included the proper adapters and all but I think it would be about 5 years too soon. All my vehicles are still using aux inputs for music streaming and I'd hate to have to use some pointless adapter every time.

Yes. It's hilarious how butt hurt these nerds get over something so pointless. "The lightening cord feels better when plugging in"- who gives a frick?

Tech moves faster these days. And there are plenty of solutions out there to meet the varied tech concerns of the populous. Here's a solution for you if they eliminate the 3.5mm jack.

Bluetooth Aux adapter

Because people are assuming that this means if you want headphones for your iPhone you'll have to buy a $200 pair of beats. In the short term it might mean that, but Apple doesn't seem overly concerned about the fairly robust 3rd party accessories market that has sprung up around iDevices.

They provide headphones in the box. Why would they stop that especially if they move to a proprietary connection. You could just as easily argue that they will start including beats earbuds with an iPhone purchase.

I didn't read the entire thread but isn't it possible that they will still have a headphone jack but those who want to use the lightning jack can?

Might check that out. Thanks. I remember looking for something like that a few years ago because my aux input in my car is in the glove box and I don't think they had quite got them figured out back then. That one seems to have pretty decent reviews on amazon. Thanks.

It's just more typical Apple strategy of dumbing down products and locking in consumers. I'm not worried about it, I don't have an Apple mobile device I listen to music on.

But it's a solution in search of a problem. I'm sure it won't both that many folks, but for me, it'd ensure I'm not going back to an iPhone anytime soon. I have high end headphones. I don't want to run it through a converter to listen to music, and I'm definitely not using the 2 dollar headphones provided (hell I wouldn't use the beats if provided).

For a company that needs to excite, this doesn't excite. Are we just at the point that they can't find a real problem to solve?

Bluetooth Aux adapter

I mean, you're right this would probably work for some. But people who have good headphones or good quality music don't tend to use bluetooth anyway. It just isn't there yet in SQ.
