The headphone jack components take up an entire corner of the iPhone:

Transfer the function of the headphone jack over to the Lightening plug and look at how much space is opened up for a larger battery or whatever else they want to use it for.

Really? Have you even tried using both? The lightning connector is light years better than the micro USB. It is reversible and gives a confidence inducing click when it snaps into place unlike the shitty micro USB connectors which seems to fall apart after a year or so of constant use on many Android devices. The fact that the micro USB is not reversible is such a huge deal that they are looking to change the standard next go around to make it symmetric.

ETA:
The article linked in the OP is nothing but a click bait article and as expected all the Android fanboys are frothing in the mouth here. Are you guys really that stupid to not get the tenor of the article? The guy is a troll and you guys got trolled hard. There is no way Apple is getting rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack. They shipped the first iPhone with a proprietary jack and people didn't like that and soon after they shifted to the universal standard. They won't make the same mistake again. The head phone through the lightning jack will probably just an option in the future. There is no way Apple will make it such that the phone can't be charged when you are listening to music on it using your headphones. Get real people.

I fricking hate apple with every fiber in my being, but the lightning charger is definitely superior. It hurts me to even acknowledge that.

Yes.

I'll admit that I haven't used a single micro USB cable or android device for that long so I'll take your word for it.

In general my opinion is that Apple hardware is usually superior.

That sounds great and all on paper but I haven't found that it makes a huge difference IRL.

I have a 5S and have 3 lightening chargers, one in my laptop bag for work/travel, one on my night stand and an adapter in my car.

What I've found is that I generally use all the the same way. They keep the same coil pattern so I end up plugging them in the same way.

Maybe it would be a bigger deal if I just had the one cable for home work and travel, but even with my 4S it was never a problem for me to have to plug the phone in the same way. I just don't see why this was such a big deal.

They could put an SD card slot there, but that would make it more difficult to ream customers for their on board storage.

all i'm saying is the following things at my house share the same cord charger.

- 2 nexus 4 phones
- 2 mytouch phones
- 1 jambox jawbone
- 1 nexus 5
- 1 garmin bike computer
- 1 garmin watch
- 2 logitech harmony remotes
- 3 LED red rear bicycle lights
- 2 LED white front bicycle lights

i have 2 microUSB cables on my kitchen counter and on any given day, any number of random things are charging.

My wife has an iphone and we have a few ipads in the house. Ive had those lightning cables fail faster than Lindsay Lohans rehab.

OK gotcha.

In fairness, I have no beef with the lightening cable, I just haven't seen where it is so much more awesome than micro USB.

my wife won an ipad 2, she uses it ALL the time, i've bought 3 cables because the 'neck' near the plug seems to fall apart all on its own

my daughter's mom bought her an ipad mini last year. she lost her charger and i went to plug it into my wife's when i realized..it wasnt the same

i have too much shite to keep track of to fuss with all kinds of different cables.

For how many people is that the use case?

In our house our lightning cables charge 2 iPhones and 2 iPads in multiple rooms. We use multiple AmazonBasics (Lol!) lightning cables around the house for this purpose because the phones and the tablets are the stuff we use most often and need recharging.

The laptops come with their own chargers. Our car Garmin 2595LMT comes with its own charger. Our Canon cameras come with the adapters for the charging the rechargeable battery. None of those use the micro USB. My bad experience with two Samsung Galaxy phones (the cable wouldn't even stay in one the 2nd one, it became that lose) and one Nokia windows phone has me completely sworn off micro USB connectors for smartphones.

If true, I'm sure there will be an adapter.

Saw a 45 yr old white guy wearing Beats headphones and couldn't believe how ridiculous he looked!

There are hundreds of headphone companies they could buy for 3billion less. Instead they opt for the silly fad brand. Two years from now, Beats will be at TJ Maxx. Guarantee it.
