Hey guys, I just got a Nexus 6 as my personal phone. I'd love to get into rooting and installing custom roms, but honestly I don't know where to start. I haven't taken any pictures or done anything I mind losing yet. I watched the XDA video on how to root, and it involved using programs and hooking it up to my computer. Is this the best way to root the device?

if its anything like the N4 and N5, i would HIGHLY recommend using WUGFRESH toolkit (ignore the haters on XDA that say to do this with command line stuff)

eta also to get the fastboot drivers (you'll need these to run WUG), just install PDANET. easiest way to get the drivers by far.

I'll be doing this probably this afternoon so hopefully I'll have a good positive story to say!

I just have to find a ROM that suites my style now, but I'm excited to use Greenify and Titanium Backup.

ultimatehog and ilikelsu are your sources. they've probably flashed 100 roms between them in the last month

I've tried quite a few. Right now I'm using the Terminus ROM because of the features, but I've yet to find the perfect ROM. The AOSP-based roms like Terminus and Rastapop are still sorting out some issues.

I'm definitely not an Android expert, as my experience with it started only when I got the Nexus 6. But, I can attest to it being simple enough, as I was unlocked, rooted, and decrypted on day 1. +1 to Wugfresh's tool. At a minimum you can use it to unlock, root, decrypt, and flash roms, as well as undo all of the aforementioned things.

WUG installs everything you need, and then roots it for you, and can make nandroid backups. WUG is freakin' amazing.

Easy as pie, really is. And you can't screw it up beyond repair so don't worry.

Have any questions or issues let me know.

Thanks CAD!

My Nexus 6 is officially rooted. I've been playing around with Greenify and Tasker. I can finally do the Tasker setup where if I text a certain phrase to my phone it will beep so I can find it, even if it's on silent.

When I get it setup, I'll post the framework. I've also always wanted to make a setup where, if my phone gets stolen, I can get it to blast horrible, terrible things stuck on the loudest setting. I know it wouldn't help me get the phone back, but there would be a certain satisfaction knowing the guy who stole it had to walk around with it blasting "I'm a thief who enjoys licking stray cat's urethras."

Nah, something like "I'm a thief and like to lick buttholes and give myself dirty sanchez's" on a loop with a beat
