Why not use the sites that are like Netflix or Hulu but have every episode of every show on tv and most every movie including in theater movies? Sports seem to be a bit harder to find but not impossible. The site I use has a movie site and a tv site. Been using for over 5 years and have rarely been dissapointed. And cost was a one time $10 PayPal charge.

Install the Ares wizard. From that, you can add sports devil. I was having the same problem until I stumbled upon it yesterday in the wizard.

asked this a couple month ago, but didn't really see an answer in any of the following posts, so here we go again.

if you get sling and a roku type device, do the channel subscriptions through sling allow you to watch shows on demand via the roku channel apps, or would you still need a dvr to watch the live sling shows whenever you wanted? We never watch anything live besides sports, so the live only on sling vs. the dvr is the last thing making me hold out. Thanks again

Sweet I will try that.

Side question: I attempted to watch a movie on Genesis the other day and it would play about 3 minutes and kept buffering but would never finish playing. Didnt matter which streaming link I tried.

I'm definitely a Kodi newb, so please forgive any stupid questions. I have a Galaxy S4 and I'm trying to cast via Chromecast to my TV. I installed the Yatse remote and it will find the Chromecast, bring up the Yatse logo on the TV screen and attempt to load the movie and then it goes blank.

I also tried to use the Bubble UpNp player. Again, it comes up on the TV screen, but once I try to play anything, I get an error message.

I'm guessing that I may have something configured wrong, or that my Chromecast doesn't support whatever file type it is that Kodi is trying to stream. I'm fairly certain that the Chromecast is the first one that came out and I know my phone isn't the latest and greatest. Can someone tell me if I just need to upgrade my player or is there some configuration that I can check/change to make it work? TIA.

Cord cutting questions:
1. How is getting a Roku any different than having a smart tv?
2. How can i record OTA channels without having to buy an expensive arse TIVO with a monthly subscription? Is there another way to record? I have a desktop computer very close to the tv.
3. Do I really need to get an OTA antenna? If I have Cox internet, do the local channels still come through even though i don't have a cable subscription?

Roku is well-supported, receives regular software updates, has many more "channels" with more added all the time.

Some prefer Tablo over Tivo. You could also get a TV tuner card for your desktop and install software that does DVR stuff.

Yes.

No.

While this is correct, especially for the general interests of this board, I would qualify it. If you want anything live or local from your OTA channels like Sports and News then you need an antenna. If you just care about the prime time TV shows, you can usually stream those after they air from sources like Hulu or the ABC/NBC/CBS/Fox apps.

Hulu yeah, but don't you usually need a paid TV subscription to watch on the network apps?

I've been reading about this Playon App that allows you to watch all the ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX shows online. The Playon app gives you access to any show that appears in a browser. All the prime shows are available online the day after they show.
Anybody have any experience with this?

What "channels"?
I can watch Netflix/ESPN/HBO/Hulu/VUDU/Amazon Prime on my tv's apps.
What else is there other than OTA channels that i'll get through an antenna?

so what more am i getting with a Roku? All it really is is a hub for apps, which i'm not sure why i would need that when my tv already has that built in.

I have Playon and have been using it like this. Korkstand is correct in that some of the network apps require network logins. I'm pretty sure NBC and ABC didn't need it, I'll have to check my settings later to say for sure. Most things that you couldn't get through those apps you should be able to get with Hulu.

I haven't tried recording anything from Hulu yet with Playon, but I have done shows from NBC, USA and SyFy without any problems. One thing about Playon is that the interface isn't that great for watching what you've recorded. You just have to go too many levels deep in the interface to get at what you want. But I just installed Plex on my PC as well, and the Plex app for Roku is free now, so I'm able to have Plex's superior interface for streaming movie files and any TV shows that Playon has recorded.

I'm not sure how you feel about illegal streams, but Plex supposedly has some plugins that let you access them like Kodi. If you don't have a problem with the legality and also don't mind the crap shoot of stream quality you often run into with illegal streams, that would be an alternative to Playon.

Does your TV have support for the media servers we've talked about? Playon probably not, Plex, Maybe. But like I said, you can use Playon as a DVR and access the recordings through Plex.

If you are happy with the features of your smart TV, then I guess you don't need a Roku. But I assure you the selection on Roku far exceeds that of any smart TV. I would also take an educated guess that the Roku interface is much more pleasing to navigate than your smart TV. Also, if you have multiple TVs from different manufacturers, it's nice to use a common interface rather than switching mental gears to navigate different ways.

The Roku also has a "unified search", so if you don't know which channel or streaming service has a particular show, you can search and it will tell you how to watch it.
