Are any cord cutters on here from Mandeville or Covington? I just bought a house in north Covington, and we're cutting the cord. I read the sticky cord cutting thread and checked out a lot of the links, but I was hoping someone close to me had done the same thing. I need to figure out what's the best attic mounted antenna for me. What do you guys use?

Also, has anybody had any success splitting indoor antennas? I'd like to split two different ways - with two tv's being on the same line, and one tv being on the other.

I've read that the unidirectional ones reach further, so I've been looking at those. Any advice?

TIA.

eta: this is the one I've been looking at (the 50 mile).

In Covington. I have Sling, works great. Have not tried an indoor antenna. However, there are sites that tell you how far you are from the towers so you will know how much of an antenna you need. Frankly, I do not miss the local stations.

I am in Covington near St. Tammany Hospital and have done the same. I purchased a SlingTV subscription and placed an antenna in my attic above the second story in my home (about 25' above ground). Here's what I learned:

- OTA reception is HIGHLY sensitive to your location. Many factors affect reception, particularly antenna height above ground and the distance capability of the antenna (that's a whole physics discussion left for another day). Another big one is obstructions in the path to the transmitting tower such as buildings, houses, trees, and the like. Your mileage may vary from mine but I hope to provide you a good starting point.

- All of the NOLA local stations transmit from antennas that are located either in Algiers or Chalmette. Because you are probably about 40-45 miles away, a directional antenna is likely your only choice. I would guess that you would need to point the antenna 175-180 degrees (almost due South). Start there and adjust as needed. You can check direction from your own location here AntennaWeb.org

-All of the NOLA locals stations broadcast on channels in the UHF band except the PBS station, WYES. It broadcasts in the upper VHF band. There are no NOLA locals in the lower VHF band anymore. So, if you want all local NOLA stations except WYES, all you need is a UHF antenna. If you want WYES, too, you will need an antenna that receives the upper VHF band. More on that below...

-I get all of the UHF stations with no problems using a very large Yagi-style ChannelMaster antenna in my attic. I had good success receiving the UHF stations using a Clearstream 2V (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/antennas-direct-clearstream-2v-long-range-hdtv-antenna-black-silver/6847298.p?skuId=6847298) in my attic, also.

- I tried every combination of commercial and homemade upper VHF antennas and still can't get WYES consistently. Most days I get nothing but on days with heavy but low cloud cover, I can get it fairly well. The list of antennas that I tried for WYES includes this 100 mile Channelmaster (https://www.channelmaster.com/Digital_HDTV_Outdoor_TV_Antenna_p/cm-2020.htm). Still, no go except during favorable weather conditions.

- I split the incoming signal 4 ways and do not have any problems at all. If you have issues, try a pre-amplifier. I added a Winegard LNA-200 pre-amplifier and while it didn't allow me to get WYES any better, it completely eliminated all of the brief dropouts from the other locals even during heavy rains. Beyond that, a signal amplifier could be used but I doubt it would be needed.

- SUMMARY: Buy the longest range antenna you can, place it as high as you can, you will get all of the locals in the UHF band, forget getting WYES.

Nerd out.

Thanks man! That was literally exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I don't care much about PBS except for documentaries, and I think I can stream most of those. My house is one story, but the roof is steep, so hopefully I can get it up pretty high.

Do you just use a generic splitter + extra coax to split the signal?

Yep. Plain old cable TV splitter works fine.

As others have said, definitely go for a directional antenna. My signal is decent enough but I am really hoping DTVNow gets locals soon. A strong wind messes with my signal.

Great. I just ordered that antenna, a splitter, and a length of coax for the antenna > splitter. I just have to figure out how the existing coax in my house is wired so I know what to do from the splitter.

So I mounted the clearstream in my attic day before yesterday. I split it four ways to various cable ports throughout the house. I could only pick up a couple Spanish channels in the 40's, and Fox. Any ideas?

I used my phone compass to point the antenna towards 180 degrees. I get off today around 1:00, and I'm gonna go back and see if turning it and/or re-positioning it helps.

eta: Right now, I'd estimate it's probably like 15' off the ground. It's a one story house. I put it where I did because it's facing the only window in my attic. Should I forego the window and just try to move it higher?

I just moved into a new house in Covington and bought the Clearstream based on this thread. Did a basic install yesterday but didn't get the TV setup. I'll let you know what kind of results I have.

My antenna is pointing south, towards the transmitters and I have no windows in my attic. I used the app to fu=ind the right direction and eyeballed it. Works fine.

How long are your runs? I'm splitting mine three ways, and I'm thinking I'm going to need a preamp because I've got 50+ foot runs on all three lines.

Update: I did the same thing as you, but wound up splitting it three ways. At first, I was also only getting one local channel and Telemundo ( ). I just adjusted the antenna 5 degrees or so, and it picked up all the others. Mine is facing 168-170 degrees mounted in the attic and I'm in northwest Covington. My runs are really long, so I bought the preamp suggested in this thread, and it totally eliminated dropouts. Picture is great.

20' run to one TV. Get some pixelation every now and then. I saw where you adjusted the angle of your antenna. I may try that as well.

5 degrees made a huge difference.
